first evidence:

oops!  you messed up your lipstick.  TRY AGAIN

and my second evidence!

oh shit, lol, it got taken down from youtube.

well, it was the first 9 minutes of the game.  what did we see in that time?  decide whether or not to get up from the bed!  go use the bathroom!  start shaving!  brush your teeth by shaking the PS3 controller up and down!  listen to horrible dialogue like "i should put on my clothes before i go downstairs!"  gee, thanks in-game narrative!

there's a part of me that believes this kind of game might not be a terrible idea in general, but this is not the game to prove that theory.

No idea what we're talking about here. Someone's making another Shenmue?

haha, yea, kinda sorta.  it's a game from Dave Cage, the creator of Omikron and Farenheit (two PC games i never actually played).

there was this tech demo of the game circulating on youtube a few years ago.  it was like, an uncanny valley interview with a woman sitting in a chair.  she gets progressively more agitated and then pulls a gun on the cameraman or something like that.  anyway, visually i'm pretty impressed with the game, but it's looking pretty boring, game wise.

reality check for me:   i actually really liked Shenmue.  well, what i played of it.  i stopped playing when i got up to the part where you get a job at the docks.  apparently there was...forklift racing?  yea, stopped around that point.

but at least Shenmue was QTEs + Virtua Fighter + Space Harrier in the arcade + GTA.  Heavy Rain is looking to be ALL QTEs.  that might work for Dragon's Lair, but this doesn't seem to be a fast-paced and witty 80s animated film feature.

This is all that needs to be said about the game Joe: lol, French game makers. Trust me, I know from experience!

Must admit, the interface looks interesting, but it's still not enough for me to touch the thing. Yeah, I'm pretty fucking tired of hearing about this game. I just want it to come out already and be done with.

Also, regarding Shenmue, it's a game that had to happen, so others can learn from its mistakes. Which makes the existence of Heavy Rain especially baffling. $20 says that it was directly influenced by it, and has simply taken this long to get made. Mind you, that doesn't mean it's aged like fine wine. The big time French game makers are just stubborn like that and want shit their way, no matter what. In the end, looks to be some shitty idea of what an interactive experience should be, circa 2001, with 2010 gloss.

And I can bash the French freely due to knowing and being pals with so many French Canadians, who will all back me up 1000%.

It's 2010 and with all that progress with graphics and game engines character models (like that girl in the video)  still walk like robots (same animation over and over) and turn like forklifts. Just look how she turns to the bathroom.

I like the idea of the game that simulates more common and mundane aspects of everyday life. I do not know if I actually enjoy playing it.

I'm fairly certain that the Sims has managed to capture the mundane and made it as enjoyable as possible in a video game setting as it's going to get.

Yes, indeed. But Sims do not force you to participate in (pre scripted? and QTE heavy) mundane all the time. It's obvious that creators of Heavy Rain are not going after Sims fans, rather are trying to create more immersive (thanks to those QTE's) crime story.

Wasn't the charm of Indigo Prophecy the sarcasm? Although it got over the top at the end...

Heavy Rain seems to heavily live up to its predecessor in that sense. I'm really psyched.
TOO PSYCHED.

but stuff like this:

and especially this:

makes me...kind of on the cautious side of things.  also, where is the "smack the shit out of your son" or the "stay the fuck still or i'll beat your ass" button?

This more than lives up to my expectations!

Indigo Prophecy was like 100% brilliant and fun and at the same time 100% lol about the gameplay.
I can't describe it, but that's why it was profound.
The controls were as ridiculous as they could have imagined.
The gameplay stats like your sanity meter were basically pure nonsense.
It's how I learned never to mix meds with alcohol...

you raise an interesting point; i might be looking at this game all wrong (i.e. correctly).

i think it could be sort of fun to not take seriously whatsoever and just make horrible decisions throughout the game, but maybe when it's no longer $60.

the demo is out on Thursday, anyhow, so we'll see how it feels.

i should probably play it before i take jabs at it but.....

A trigger moves the character forward, while a control stick guides them. Camera angles are fixed, often for the best view but, unconventional in modern games, often not behind the back.

Note: Steve's a great guy, but he also hated NMH2, which as I've stated a few times already, is the first legit contender for GOTY 2010.

And after finishing any Suda 51 game, I have the urge to give Killer 7 another chance, but I know what will happen; I'll get bored and frustrated by the controls. But at least it seems less French than Heavy Rain.
