These Are The Days, And The Passions, Of Our Youth

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

It’s been a crazy past couple of days. I know I say that I lot, but trust me on this one. Seriously. Everyone will have to excuse the lack of details for the time being. Might explain things sometime later down the road, or maybe never, hard to say at this point. Let’s just say it’s fairly personal, as most matters relating to family tend to be.

Anyhow, was originally planning on posting a full rundown of Capcom’s press event tomorrow, but around the time I was originally expecting to get a taste of Dark Void, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for the PS3/Xbox 360, I will instead be on a plane heading back home. Then there’s the latest round of assorted game related news and nonsense, which I’m trying to cover on a more regular basis, to prevent another ridiculous mega-post like last time. Oh well.

Was also going to talk about this past Saturday’s Anal Cunt performance that I caught with Mooney, which was fairly outstanding; it’s just hilarious how hipsters are all about being ironic, yet they ultimately have zero ability to deal with anyone that tries pulling their legs who isn’t one of the hive mind (let alone realize that it’s happening half the time). Best part of the show was when the drummer totally snapped and went after some douche in the audience, and coming close to tearing him to shread, along with the guitarist’s warning for everyone else (“Seriously, you do NOT want to mess with this man, not fucking around here, he is ALL business… Once I came to the studio with beat-up shoes… And then he bought me a new pair”). All that and more is detailed in my report, which is almost finished, but my flight is in just a few hours and I’ve yet to pack, plus there’s a ton of people I need to email. So it too will have to wait.

But before heading off, just a quick note: this upcoming Sunday the 17th, I’ll be a guest for something called NEWDradio, to talk about the gaming culture here in America, along with the influence that it’s Japanese counterpart has, social responsibility (if any) of game designers, and the general impact of titles that are deemed “desensitizing” by critics, from GTA to the more recent Rape Lay (I know). I’ll be on the air with several other experts from both sides of the fence, plus fielding live calls from listeners. Should be interesting! More info can be found here. Give it a listen and call in if you can.

Well, since I have a few extra minutes to spare, though still not enough to really say much, how about I just pass along some random game related pics? For starters, here are my fave entries from this year’s My Famicase Exhibition, something that I go absolutely ga-ga for pretty much annually. And yes, I know this is old news to some, but if I waited till next week, then it would be even more so…

… Here’s another pic I’ve been dying to share for some time now; also in Japan recently was Hobby Complex, where tons of tons of homemade models and figures were on display, including this drool-worthy assortment of custom Vic Vipers…

… The full version can be seen here. My God, what I would do to get my hands on that entire line-up. Especially the ultra bad-ass Big Core! Anyway, here we have these these wonderful reproductions of two R-Type ships…

… I can only imagine how much more awesome they?ll look after the final coat of paint. But that’s pretty much it as far as shump-related content, at least from what I’ve been able to find (if anyone sees anything else that I might dig, please let me know). Otherwise, it’s mostly what one would expect from such a show: plenty of finely detailed animu girls, which also happens to be up my alley! Especially when it comes to the ladies of Persona 4; this Rise figure is pretty damn hawt…

… As is this one of Naoto…

And finally, something I stumbled across over at NeoGAF, in a thread about making one’s own MAME cabinet, the do’s and the don’ts. Guess which one it falls under?

… The correct answer of course is, most definitely! Alright, that’s it for now. Be back soon, I hope.

UPDATE: For those of you who want to see all the Famicases from over the years, here’s a very handy link!

Argh. You beat me to the Famicase posting…. That’s okay, though. I figured out something I can do for it that I haven’t seen anyone try yet.

I really like this project a lot more than the Penguin/Criterion packaging redesigns. I’ve scoured the internet but haven’t been able to turn up pics from 06 or 07. Oh well.

Yeah, pics from 06 and 07 seem to be super scarce. I’d check my own old post circa that timeframe myself, but it’s super late and my brain is mush… staying up all night instead of taking a nap before my flight has already bitten me in the ass. Great.

BTW. I totally love your podcasts. And this coming from a dude that flat-out hates them in general.

Also, we should really hang out sometime soon dude. I mean, aside from the shared interests, we live like a block apart or something that ridiculous, right?

Hey Matt. Sorry it took me so long to write a response. Will I see you at Mocca Saturday? Or are you in Connecticut? (That’s where I’m from, btw.)

Thanks for listening to the podcasts. I’m pretty sure you’re one of the (very) few. I’ve almost got the new one streaming. So close I can taste it. Fucking HTML and third-party hosting suck.

Oh, and I finally posted the Famicase thing, in case you were wondering if I was ever going to do it.

    See you this weekend, maybe.

    Hey there Lin.

Yeah, just caught your latest Famicase post. Great stuff. It’s nice to finally know a little back story.

And fantastic job as usual with the podcasts. Seriously. I’m actually a bit behind… still in the middle of the 4/15 installment. I guess it proves what a poor resident of Washington Heights I am, because when I first heard the term WHFR, I figured it was just your thing, had no idea that there’s actual station and all.

Anyhow, I will only be at MoCCA this Sunday, Guess you can only make it out on Saturday? Which seems to be the case for virtually everyone I know. Bummer… We should really need to hook up one of these days.
