WARNING: MASSIVE amount of pics, sorry 56k.

So here are pics from the i am 8-bit video game art show opening, courtesy of somakitty. Regarding the event:
“… hands down, this was the best show of 2005 (so far).”
Man, I’ve never wanted to be in LA so bad like right now. And I honestly believe that one does not have to be a video game aficionado to appreciate some of these pieces…

anyone and everyone who can or will be in LA now through 5/20 needs to hit this show. there was even more on display i didn’t photo. hot stuff!
I know its been said a million times, but I’ll say it again: you REALLY should start an art show blog or something!
That’s crazy stuff.
I think mario’s hand has a “cheat code” like thing on it.
Like “up, up, down, down” or something. That’s hilarious.
so this is running THROUGH the 20th of may?
so… now not only will i be jetlagging myself to LA for E3…
AND not sleeping the night of the 18th to catch Episode III after a FULL day of miles and miles of gaming madness…
now I’ll checking THIS out on the evening of the 19th after day 2 of E3… and not having slept STILL because of Star Wars….
my nerd sense might just…. might just…
might just kill me.
for real.
really.
i’m going to die from all of this.
dead.
does the LA chamer of commerce know how many people are seriously going to have health problems with all of this?
god.
i’m dead.
for those of you who will be here for e3, the gallery is having a closing party on 5/18 from 7-11pm. they usually have a liquor sponser (free drinks) and a dj, so it’s a good time. see you there!
matt – i know i need a dedicated site, but i’m not a web person. i know what types of pages i need and i have the content, i just don’t have the skills to get it online. i’m thinking about asking for some help on YH, i just haven’t gotten around to it yet. you’d be surprised by how many random messages i get b/c someone did a google search for an artist and came up with my YH blog. it’s starting to happen multiple times a week. i’m also getting artists coming up to me at shows thanking me for helping them sell a print/piece by getting their name out on my blog. it’s surreal.
Well if there’s any place where you’re going to get help setting up a site, YH is it. Hell, I’d offer to do it myself, but I still have the IGDA NY site to do, plus I think I promised to do one for some random Japanese punk band that I met at a party Friday night (I had some drinks in me, so details are a bit fuzzy).
Too Much too comment on. My head’s gonna ’splode! Those pieces kick Donkey Kong Ass!!! Love the Craola piece. Sooo Coool….rrrrrrr,,ahhhahhhhhhhhh Skra-BOOOOOOOOOMMM!!!!! (8-bit brain matter all over my desktop)
Umm, Joe, if you are going to talk about exploding heads in conjunction with video games, the correct term is “headasplode”.
I think the Mario one says UUDD LRLR BA Start, as its right next to the Contra one.
That’s awesome. When will it be comming to philly?
–
Help a poor boy out. All i ever wanted was something free.
I don’t think a tour is in the works, but it sure would be sweet.
so we ARE all on acid. i like the Luigi Apocalypse by Isaac Pierro.
nice pictures, here is some pictures i have made on my computer, the idÈa was to make it look like an 3-year old kid had done the pictures.
check it out if u want to, the adress is

Some very good stuff in here. I’d love to see a few of them as posters.
Some nice stuff… Some things realy amazed me
Very very cool. Wish the show would travel to the East Coast. If you are looking for an easy and well written gallery to implement, I would check out: http://gallery.menalto.com/.
Great !
(A guy from Paris)
Very cool Expo! =)
that’s awesome stuff.
Ke buena exposicion quisiera compartir mi trabajo con ustedes yo hago algo similar en Mexico , adios.
Holy .. that would take major team skillz to play with that controller .. =) now for the new systems they need to make a large gamepad =)
I was reading about this earlier today on cnn.com. This really looks boss (my way of saying cool ^ ^;), really retro. I do like the classical arts and all, they’re great, but some how this ties more into my era. It’s more of the art of today, and for the future it might just be classical masterpieces.
All those artists who participated are real boss! The Tron is my favorite!
just wondering. when and where will the next thing happen and stuff. also, is any artwork for sale?
Unfortunately, I don’t when or if there’s another one happening. But I think I’ll try to contact the folks behind the event and see if there’s another one in the works.
And yes, as I believe I already mentioned, the artwork was for sale.
holy shit!!!!! this is so great. a friend sent me a link to check out the “I Am 8-bit” and it blew my mind. I live in Buffalo, NY and this show is exactly what my focus is. are any of these artists in a collective, or even colleagues? where do I sign up!?
-thomas holt
This showcase of art is very cool and has inspired me too. We all grew up with these games and its awesome to see different peoples outlook on them. keep it up. peace
LOMEG
I have not seen too much old school game art. Now they are having actually gallerie showings? This is one of the coolest things i have ever seen. The pictures and the art are just fantastic. Man….why does all the cool stuff have to be in cali??
Would love to buy a reprint of one of these, especially the one by Gerg Craola Simkins. Any idea how?
awsome
Very very very niiiiice !!!!
Is it possible to buy picture?
++
GREAT JOB! kicks ass on mine of the same theme, 2002 http://www.selectparks.net/exhibitions/trigger/
Where is the whole picture of Hazes painting??? Three pics with it, but not one with the whole painiting!
Anyway, really nice art there! 8-bit nintendo still rocks!
i am guessing that mario might have the konami code written on his hand (due to the contra pic next to that one): up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start
Very interested in buying several pieces. Are any for sale or are any of the artists signed up on art.com?
check it out – coverage from the fist I am 8 Bit show!

wow that is fantasmically swazeet…nintendo rocks it old school like chuck taylors!!! holla at’cha boy mario.
I’ve seen these pics on other sites – it’s great to finally find the source!
That nude princess painting is hilarious, but I love the ‘Team of ‘84′ portrait…
When will it come to San Francisco?
Woah, is that silver life sized lady supposed to be Dural from Virtua Fighter?
This is great art, I wish we could have something like this up in Ontario.
Tony, you shame yourself. It is up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, start. For shame, but that is what is written on his hand.
i have loved this!!!!!!!!! it renember the old times man!!!!!!!was a very good idea to make this it makes you renember when you was a child !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its great man just great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joe Hahn from linkin park had a painting up at this show. the pic can be found at this url.

Peach is a babe.
WTH!!!!!!!!!!!
where is kirby!?!?
damn!!
i played “Kirby adventures” since my childhood!! *sob*
anyway… nice pics.. but there is missing Kirby and booble booble
Some people say games are not an Art. Yeah, they right, how could Need For speed be Art???
By the same way Fast and Furious isn’t.
All my life I believe that Art is something Desautomatic. That Means something that you need to use your brain to see it for real. Paintings, Movies, Dance, Music… everyone of these need to be thought before and after to be really aprecciated. Like games.
Peace people
We love you
I am 8-bit is the greatest thing ever!!!

[...] I should go for a walk. I’ve eaten way too much junk over the last few days. It’s been very stressful having a boss again. Alas my money is directly proportional to the amount of work I do, so I will just have to keep treating myself with medicinal cheap cask red wine.I’ve laid a contingency plan, it is in a way my version of dealing with stress. I really am unused to this. I shouldn’t be letting it get to me, but it is a constant battle. Habit of too many years of taking my work home with me, I’ve never truly been this disinterested in such a substantial part of my work. I have other more interesting things I could be doing (but wouldn’t anyway if given the opportunity)No, I must reassess. I think while work’s not helping, it’s not the cause of this discomfort and background stress.Analogy after analogy I select after a moments pause and delete, I have way to many corny analogies in my head.More and more I’m falling towards absurd humor, abstract and detailed thoughts. Stuff the gaps full of new ideas to keep the gears happy.i am 8-bit: Opening Night [...]

People these days consider video games to be a new choice of artwork, and I’d have to say they do have a point. The growth in creativity is phenomonal, from the boxy little characters from Nintendo to the beautiful CGI characters of the Final Fantasy chronicles. Some people would agree with this opinion, like on this one blog http://www.fort90.com/journal/?p=205. While there are others who think differently like on this blog I found, http://www.loonyboi.com/blog/archives/000835.php. Which do you consider more? Is it art? [...] Aetheis Evangel (eirias_valar) wrote,@ 2005-06-09 12:23:00 Current mood:mrph Current music:Icy Guy – Cavern Escape 8-bit Art, Cookies, and Fob Woes So, apparently there was an 8-bit video game -themed art show in LA not too long ago. And thar be pictures.Yeah. (Courtesy of Chris.)In other news… let’s see. On Monday, I went to Oakridge. Bought new shoes (Rockport, again, though this time slightly less dressy), some socks, some cookie ingredients (ground ginger, baking soda, and molasses, which took me a while to find), and the first Cake CD, thereby completing my collection.I made the cookies that night. Preparation took me something like two hours, plus about a combined half hour to bake them. Hopefully I can cut that time down a bit, next time (’next time’ likely being tomorrow). I also overcooked at least the first batch, and I either also overdid the second batch, or I didn’t store them properly. Next time I’ll try Tupperware, possibly with a slice of white bread in there with ‘em.On Tuesday, my (maternal) grandparents took me out looking for a fob as a graduation present. I went to collect it today (the jeweller had to order in and attach the fasteners for either end), but the clip he had on the end intended for my belt-loop was too small – apparently it fit his, but as I’m wearing jeans (as I typically do), there’s no way it’ll fit mine. He fetched the largest clip he had in that style, which could be made to fit, but not terribly nicely, and he doubted he’d be able to get one such in gold. So, he’s looking in to alternatives. For my part, it occurs to me that a potential solution would be to form a loop in the chain, or more accurately have it split in a sort of ‘Y’ shape, with a small fastener on one end of one of the branches. Then I’d be able to just close the chain around the belt-loop. This would require shortening the chain somewhat, of course, but only very slightly, as the ‘loop’ would only have to be just big enough to encircle a belt-loop.However, I suppose it’s possible that this would put too much stress on the one link at which the two branches merge. I’m also not at all certain as to how it would look.Nearly-equivalently, of course, one could just run the chain as is through the belt loop and attach the clasp to the chain itself, but again this could put extra stress where it’s not intended, and I’m almost certain that this method would not produce an attractive result. So, we shall see.(Post a new comment) [...]

[...] Last week we highlighted one way that video game systems are being used as a form of personal and political expression. This week we have an example of video games as art, and really good art at that. The i am 8-bit show recently opened in LA and it highlights some of the astonishingly creative work that artists are doing around the theme of video games. You might recognize some of your favorite characters in the portraits below, seen through an artistic lense. We particularly like the child running in fear from bob-omb and friends, since it reminds us of our own misspent childhoods. Mad props to Fort90 for taking these great pictures of the art on display.
