The Dark Spire

I finally got it in, and have just started.
It's pretty much a 1980's dungeon RPG... It even admits to it on the packaging. But, the interesting thing is, the game itself makes no qualms to admitting "yeah, it's an 80's dungeon RPG."
The major modern design influences put into it is a tutorial and the color palette, and the graphic design of the game in general in modern mode. Which you can turn off for the glorious lines of the old school style mode.
I'm impressed so far, but it's probably that "new game" feel that you get before you realize how jaded you are.

i'm a pretty huge fan of dungeon crawls, roguelikes and everything in between.
when Atlus first announced this, i was definitely planning to get it. i just never did. but i see it new in stores everywhere, for $20, so that may change soon.
but i also have a bunch of other stuff i need to finish first, so this one may unfortunately go ignored as it seems like it's "pretty damn good" and not "amazing."

It's now $9.99 new. I picked up my copy today, but won't be getting to it for a bit.

Yeah, this game kills you quickly if you're unprepared... So it's automatically awesome!
I haven't had to deal with something like that since... I don't know when!

to be totally honest, though, i kind of like this game for its kitsch and nostalgia (for which i don't even have as i never played these types of games as a kid). it's solid as a rogue-ish dungeon crawler, but i think if i were to recommend a game like this to anyone, i'd probably go with Etrian Odyssey I or II.

I've been wanting to play the first one... Which I seemingly can't find anywhere around here.

I really loved Dark Spire initially, but I've reached a point in the game where large amounts of what I'm going to be doing now is pure grinding for xp to level up my party so I can ... grind faster. The first 3 or so levels of the tower are great because by the time you finish mapping them out and figuring stuff out, you are close to (or at) the right level to be able to handle the next level of the tower.
If I hadn't gotten derailed with other games (Fallout3 and Prototype), I'd still be mired in it though. It brings back many good childhood memories playing Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on my apple //e.
