sometimes i see things that make me wonder if the people were actually taking part in some kind of elaborate joke.  sometimes i have to assume that this is the case; that it's all an inside joke that  nobody but them actually understands.  because, otherwise, how could things like this happen?

http://www.amazon.com/N-word-Narcissus-Joseph-Conrad/dp/9076660115/

i'm sure it's probably something to make a quick buck (i assume Conrad is public domain by now [that fucking bigot<lol>]), but this is one of those things that i would assume someone might think is funny while high.  as in a "what if..." scenario laid out to one's friends who are also high.

and yet it exists

for you to buy

devil's advocate: it is one of his better books, and is underappreciated because of the title.

dhex:  this is possibly true, but i feel like anyone who would read a Joseph Conrad novel, in general, would probably look beyond something like that.

maybe i've been away from academia for too long, though; i guess i can see someone who is "liberal" and in that field who may not be comfortable reading a word.

i think it's safe to say that a buyer at, say, B&N or Borders might look twice at that title when ordering Classics or whatnot.  Given the huge explosion a few years back over the use of the word 'niggling', it's not an unwarranted concern, from a business/PR standpoint.  Unfortunately.

The spine of the new release of Boss Nigger says only "BOSS"

Outside of W&GS and AAAS I feel like most academics understand that censorship supports the status quo.
