i live not too far from this place and tried it out a month or so ago because it was "hot" on Yelp for about two months straight.

i thought it was kind of bland and there are basically better places right down the block.  add in the fact that so many reviews' scores are bolstered by people who think it's really cool to eat in a "dangerous" neighborhood.

and then i find out Bourdain is getting all on this place's dick, too, now and i'm thinking maybe i should try it again?

nah, he's just wrong.

Keep in mind that he's a face eating animal consumer, which is also the backbone of Mexican food.

that is a good point.  i suspected that their vegetarian tacos were probably not the focus (and thus my disappointment), but Gloria had a pork taco and didn't really find it much better or worse than other (similar) places we'd been to.

someone on another forum who lives nearby and is generally well versed in things recommended we try again when it's not too crowded.

and that's probably not a bad idea, as listening to the background noise of Williamsburg hipsters talk about Bushwick being hard to navigate because it's poor didn't really make our experience any more pleasant.

it was something about the subway maps in the Jefferson stop not being detailed enough or something.

i really have no fucking idea.  considering that same girl asked me for input on how to put the lime juice on the tacos, i really am starting to think i hated the place based on its patrons.

yes, well, Yelp.

it's a pretty good site if you're into looking for semi-obscure types of restaurants.  like, vegan Caribbean food, for example.

it also helped me relocate the BEST Indian restaurant i've ever been to, which was, oddly enough, in the northern suburbs of Massachusetts.  it was a cute, vegetarian, northern Indian-style buffet. only, apparently it is now closed down.

whelp, there goes any reason i had to go to MA (ok, Jon, you're still cool i'ma come up).

this thread lead me to some searching around today (online, anyhow).  after becoming heartbroken over the loss of Masalaa, i decided to see if there were any decent Indian buffets in the Queens area.

i was lead to this place, http://www.yelp.com/biz/annam-brahma-restaurant-jamaica, located in Jamaica.

it sounds up my alley and, quite frankly, little nuggets like this one here make it sound pretty fun:

"Once when I went I wanted 3 things.  I just wanted those flavors, though I knew I couldn't eat an entree, an appetizer, and a bread.  So, when I was finished, I let the server know.  She asked me if I wanted the food wrapped, and I said no.  I knew I had a long time left and work and I didn't want the food sitting in my office all afternoon.  She looked very sad that I was wasting food.  I said "I just know myself; I won't eat the leftovers if I take them home."

At that, she perked right up and smiled at me, in a very friendly way, saying "self-knowledge is the beginning of the path to enlightenment."  And that made me feel good all day.

There you have it."

i mean i don't want to generalise here.  maybe she is just a fucking moron all on her own.  but typically when i see this kind of thing and hear the stuff that she said, i immediately assume it means "just moved here from some fancy bubble community."  being surrounded by small brown people who cook tacos in an old garage is probably not something she's been exposed to much.

which would be fine, if there weren't such an air of arrogance surrounding it.  i swear; i know New Yorkers have a reputation for being "dicks," but i think newcomers really try to overcompensate.
