The last incarnation of my site came about roughly 4 years ago, and I would like to change it up again. My problem is that I have done absolutely no research into the advances in web design or programming since, and even then I got around my problems largely by purchasing a license for Article Manager. Work being what it is, I have gaps of time when absolutely nothing is going on or I am too busy to do anything else, and AM was able to streamline my upload process - plus it was pretty cheap.

The problem I ran into early on is that AM is meant more for newspaper-style sites - brief write ups and extended text-heavy articles, with few images, cross links, and no options to imbed video. This website (http://www.speedarena.com/index.html) uses AM, to give an example, and has been heavily modified; I know it's been heavily modified because it took a few months for the Interactive Tools' people to help get the system working for me.

Since it's been so long, I was wondering if there are easier ways to do this now. Whether it costs a little or is free, as long as it's secure and streamlined. I have a lot of fields entered that I would like to cross link - score, publisher, developer - but not sure how, or if I could even do that with a new setup. Then there is design - I haven't designed anything in years, and everything I did before was as basic as humanly possible to keep updating quick and because I have next to no experience with image editing. I was surprised last time to find that CSS dominated design.

I think a few people do this for a living, so what kind of costs and options are there these days? Are those template sites, with designs from anywhere from $50 to a few hundred, any good? Content management systems improved much?

What's your site? Depending on what you're trying to do, there may be an excellent free/libre CMS for your needs.

WordPress has evolved into a competent CMS, especially with some of the graph paper press templates providing turn-key solutions for a number of site-types. Drupal is getting cleaned up; in the mean time it's fine but there's a steep learning curve for development. And it's still PHP :-/

Dunno how much of a code-monkey you are, but it's in vogue to roll your own CMS using a framework like Django (note its badass admin site). If what you're doing is sufficiently simple and different from an out of the box installation of a pre-packaged CMS, you might find it easier and faster to DIY. Note that programming a blog with comments in Django takes < 15 minutes. And its templating language is just HTML with a minimal of django-specific markup (plus it can integrate with other Python. templating languages if you'd like).

So apparently the company is going to help me upgrade to 2.0 for free. Wee! I tend to have these spurts when I want to update everything, adding all the features that other places have been having, and then let it slowly go downhill. The updated CMS will be good enough, adding automated RSS stuff, allow for larger image embedding, video embedding, etc. since the system seems to have been tweaked away from working as a news manager for small to medium articles. Now all I need to do is think of a layout. Are these cheap now? Designs were expensive as shit years back, aside from those places that charge $200 to give you the files to one out of their fifty or so templates.

How are they getting the flash trailer app to change the background image on the page? I guess they've got flash and javascript talking somehow and I'd love to know how to do that.
