yeah, even if the writing and roleplaying is pretty shallow I'll be damned if the combat in ME2 isn't pretty fun. I never played the original but I think it's the polish that's keeping me around.

On the topic of this thread, I am playing the hell out of Mirror's Edge right now thanks to that insane Steam sale.
Although I genuinely do find its kinetic FPS controls to be a joy on their own I'd say it's the presentation that keeps me coming back. Even though the whole "Runner Vision" thing is sort of a lazy mechanic in some ways (yeah, I know you can turn it off) it really helps out the atmosphere, a lot. Most of the world is a washed out sterile/oppressive steel jungle (see groan-worthy Big Brother comic book plot), but your character finds refuge in tracking down the features in the world that have warm, primary colors. I think it really works in the game's favor.
The soundtrack is pretty great too. it's got a sci-fi bent, and it tends to give running-up-the-arm-of-the-crane-while-on-top-of-a-skyscraper the appropriate sense of wonder, instead of opting for some kind of empty bombast orchestral thing like so many other games do these days.

dhex I have the Fallout pack on Steam. Do you know of anyway to play Fallout1/2 in Windows 7/XP and not have the visuals turn into a glitchy quilt? I've tried playing the game on two different setups now and while I can deal with the occasional rainbow of colors the really difficult bit is when the whole screen turns black until I scroll/mouse over it. any suggestions? I really want to play it!

what? that this would somehow tie in MMX, you mean? yea, i don't think "X" was ever actually supposed to mean "10," but at this point i'd prefer they delay the tie-in game for as long as possible, considering that MMZX isn't as good as MMZ or X and there are no other halfway decent classic-style MM games on the horizon.
so uh, cheers to some new MM!
yeah, I doesn't bother me personally (I thought Mega Man 9 was great fun), although it's hard to deny the appeal of a hypothetical game that would bridge the gap, since such a game would be quite subversive on premise alone. Of course, I don't hold my breath, because it will never happen!

I shouldn't be surprised to hear that there are still OS 9 loyalists, but yeah that is a pretty interesting argument. I still us OS 9 from time to time at work and I love how speedy it is, but the GUI has always seemed to be somewhat of an obstacle for me when I'm in a hurry.
it's actually nice that the snow leopard upgrade is so inexpensive but I think I will hold off until the itch really comes back. I think I used up all of my good fortune with the successful (so far) Windows 7 upgrade on my desktop.
