http://www.fort90.com/journal/?p=696 Title: Re: Halo 3: ODST Post by: dmauro on July 10, 2009, 09:47:30 PM Fuck yeah, this game is going to own. I kind of wish it were $20 cheaper, but you know me and everyone else will buy it at the going rate and then they can drop it for everyone else 6 months down the road if they need to so whatever, I'm looking forward to it.
In case anyone wasn't aware (I wasn't), the Halo 3 multiplayer that ships with ODST (it's actually a separate disc) and has all the Halo 3 DLC maps also has three NEW maps that are only available by owning ODST. They are: Heretic (http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3ODST/imagery/screenshots/WHMBEC/inline/inline_H3ODST_Heretic_env-01.jpg) Citadel (http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3ODST/imagery/screenshots/WHMBEC/inline/inline_H3ODST_Citadel_env-01.jpg) Longshore (http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3ODST/imagery/screenshots/WHMBEC/inline/inline_H3ODST_Longshore_env-01.jpg) I was always a fan of Heretic, so I'm looking forward to that one. Title: Re: Halo 3: ODST Post by: pilot on July 11, 2009, 01:07:44 AM I'm excited but will miss playing as Master Chief :(
Title: Re: Halo 3: ODST Post by: glomag on July 11, 2009, 04:14:33 PM yeah, I pre-orderededed. I haven't checked to see how many of the improvements they made in H3 will be available in ODST, but I am assuming all. I need to be able to play co-op campaign mode for example. I NEED it.
Heretic is the remake of Midship I guess. Cool! Title: Re: Halo 3: ODST Post by: dmauro on July 13, 2009, 02:40:03 PM Co-op campaign is in. That's how I played it actually. Though you're not gonna care too much about co-op campaign after playing firefight. Glad to see you on here, Glomag!

Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on July 20, 2009, 08:16:55 PM Caught this on Kotaku earlier today (yeah, I know), but I'm happy to state that I fully remember when this was actual news; the debut of Halo 1, as the killer app for Apple's G4 chipset...

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-debut-halo-legends/53158 ... I guess it's like the Animatrix, with all these short stories by various directors, telling different tales. Note: never saw Animatrix cuz The Matrix is mad retarded. Even part one, sorry people. Anyhow, Studio 4°C is involved, so you know that at least one of them is gonna be awesome. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: sonictail on July 24, 2009, 04:39:39 AM What I really want to know is which segment will be the RvB one, a really humourous part would help immensely and help break the series up.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on July 24, 2009, 11:12:46 AM The Casio Entertainment segment looked the most promising because it was in 3D and not anime. If I were to see a Halo movie, I would want it to look like Halo 3 with higher poly models and better shaders and rendering. That anime stuff looks so lame to me and just does not jive with the Halo universe that is in my head.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on July 28, 2009, 03:08:43 PM BTW, District 9 comes out soon, which as some folks might recall, was supposed to be the Halo live action flick. I got a press copy a couple days ago, and unfortunately my issues with motion sickness has prevented me from really digging in, though I've yet to fiddle with the display settings. But thus far, I like it. I can't share many of the complaints from the reviews thus far, since I was never a diehard Halo 3 fan... hence why I'm especially curious for Dave's two cents.
In the meantime, here's a taste of the animu, which recently aired on Spite TV I guess... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A6lojxvmy4 ... Once again, the comments deserve a special look. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 21, 2009, 10:30:19 AM Well, what I've played so far is great. Firefight is the co-op experience we've wanted from the start, and the campaign seems to be different enough that it seems like they've kept it fresh without changing the stuff that works really well. So I'll let you know tomorrow, but I think I'm gonna like it.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on September 21, 2009, 11:42:40 PM So apparently, in addition to Persona PSP, Cabela's Big Game Hunter comes out tomorrow...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI-gqL4vjmg And this isn't the only time this has happened... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An_-EqWYXVs Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 22, 2009, 08:01:42 PM This new soundtrack is really nice. Without anything going on in the city, it doesn't feel like the Halo 2 New Mombassa teaser like I was kind of hoping. The city actually all feels very samey, which also helps make this feel even more like Halo 1. It actually so much like Halo 1 that I was having a really hard time using the right bumper to reload instead of the x button.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: isfet on September 23, 2009, 09:43:41 AM there's a decent chance i'll be getting this Thursday
it's so sad when i look at everyone on my friends list and they're all playing ODST and then Dave tauntingly sends me invites to a game i don't own :( Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 23, 2009, 12:26:25 PM The campaign is a little bit boring. Trudging around the same old city when every area looks like the last one you were in gets a little tiresome. I'm also still annoyed that ODSTs can flip vehicles back over. :(
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: isfet on September 23, 2009, 12:46:48 PM lol "canon"
maybe, like, the vehicles have magnets or something? so campaign is boring, but would you say that the game is worth it for the other features? i feel so out of the multiplayer loop by not owning this game right this second. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 23, 2009, 01:02:00 PM Well I haven't got to play Firefight yet except for solo. Solo it was actually a lot of fun, but after playing at that press event, I know it's going to get really good with more players. Also the Halo 3 Mythic disc has all the DLC content, so it's great for that too. I kind of wish it didn't have a campaign and was $30 because $60 is definitely asking a lot for this.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: isfet on September 23, 2009, 01:06:40 PM that is not convincing me :\
but i'm sure i will get hours of multiplayer time out of this by purchasing sooner rather than later. so...i guess it evens out? but then again, maybe i'll like the campaign a bit more than you since i'm not quite as into the Halo mythos and all that. some people have been saying that you play it somewhat differently than a regular Halo game. in that, since you're not Master Chief, you need to try different strategies. is this true or are people talking out their collective ass? Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on September 23, 2009, 01:44:38 PM Speaking as someone who has always pointed out how retarded Halo's story is, this latest release is definitely fuel for that fire. It tries it's best, but I just wish everyone would just shut up. Though I don't think anything can top the cheesiness of part 3.
I also hope Bungie never reveals what Master Chief looks like (an irrational fear, I realize), since they clearly can't create a half-way decent looking person's face in this day and age. Everything else looks awesome though! Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 23, 2009, 05:15:53 PM My roommate and I decided that whoever is modeling the faces at Bungie must be a founding member and that's why that didn't replace him ages ago. The Halo games usually have really nice stories because of Cortana. The story takes a big hit without her. This one doesn't really have a story, that is to say it's not adding anything. It's the fight for New Mombassa which was just something you saw happening mostly in the background in Halo 2.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: loopback on September 25, 2009, 02:55:50 PM So I'm not a halo fan at all, but I decided to pick up ODST and give it a whirl.
I'm not ready to hate it yet, but after a couple of hours of playtime, I am finding a lot of the levels & the design choices really suspect and kind of irritating. First is their apparent desire to go for 'ambience' in the campaign in the first bit, where everything is PITCH FUCKING BLACK. Nothing says "this is a great current-gen console experience" like not being able to see anything. And then in the next area? everything is blown out and overly-lit. So in both areas I have to turn the visor thing on in order to have the game be even vaguely playable. If they're going to make the environment so shitty, why not just leave the visor on all the time? This is akin to the Arkham Asylum problem of "stay in investigation mode all the time", except in Arkham Asylum you could turn the mode off and still SEE THINGS. My other complaint so far is that playing a FPS from the context of being in a very limited field-of-view helmet is ... not very fun so far. combined with enemies that see you from across the map but who blend in with the environment so the only way to find them is to follow the trail of bullets, it makes for less than compelling gameplay so far. I'm going to keep going with it for a bit, but this is not exactly winning me over to the idea that the Halo titles are really any good. But I'll say one thing: that live action ODST commercial is pretty stellar. If the game played half as fun as that commercial looked, it would be amazing. Also ultra-boo to the designers who set up a level where 'some' doors are openable, but all doors look the same. that's not the least bit frustrating. "Go in that building and flank them!" (looks at doors in every direction, starts playing "find the door that isn't just a texture"). But like I say, despite all the negative things I have to say so far, I'm going to give the game another shot or two. I was pretty tired and cranky last night, so I may have been picking at stuff that was just me in the learning curve of the title. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 25, 2009, 07:43:00 PM If you're having trouble seeing things in the daytime, it's because your visor is ON. You can't use it during the day because it has uses night vision. At night time you will want it on all the time. Obviously yes, you CAN turn it off, but you're not supposed to. Some of the firefight levels have nighttime versions of them because playing with the visor on is a bit of a different experience (for example, you can see invisible brutes).
Also, doors you can go through will have green lights on them, others will not or will be red. My advice is to stay away from the campaign maybe because playing as the Rookie (the non-flashback stuff) is kind of boring, and it's just not as exciting as any of the other Halo games as a campaign, and instead friend me on XBL (dmauro) and we'll play some Firefight because that is where the game gets it right. And if no one else is online, firefight is tons of fun even by yourself. It basically takes everything excellent about Halo and makes it into a high score kind of experience, without having to play against other humans. I played a solo game of firefight today that lasted two and half hours. I got to the fourth set and had a ton of skulls on, including mythic (all enemies have double health). I just couldn't take down a swarm of chieftains that had double health and near immunity to bulllets (it's already bad enough that they can't be stuck with grenades by default). Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: Chairman Meow on September 27, 2009, 06:39:33 PM Tried out Firefight mode for the first time today with Isfet, dmauro and my hungover buddy and barring the lag that reminded me of Quake 3 on 56k, it was a real blast. Firefight mode alone is going to justify the $60 for me.
Oh, and my 360 headset is borked, and I also apologize for sucking, guys. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 27, 2009, 06:52:10 PM Yeah I think that lag was caused on my end. My internet has been acting up the last few days. Sorry about that. We'll try again sometime soon.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on September 28, 2009, 12:55:51 PM Actually loopback, the whole night vision visor thing is what made me like the game a lot at first. Since I'm on a SD tv, and everything that's portrayed during the night in most PS3/360 games are impossible to see (i.e. Dead Rising), it felt like a bone being thrown to us poor folks...
... Unless it's still absolutely needed for HD set owning folks? In that case, that's kinda strange. BTW, now that I'm finally done with the anime fest, I can finally hop online, though forewarned... I completely suck at the game, so don't put me on a team and expect me to contribute anything worthwhile. Chairman Meow, are we XBL buds yet? I'm "FortNinety" in case anyone was wondering. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: Chairman Meow on September 28, 2009, 06:17:34 PM My roommate and I decided that whoever is modeling the faces at Bungie must be a founding member and that's why that didn't replace him ages ago. The Halo games usually have really nice stories because of Cortana. Cortana's face isn't half bad, why can't anyone else look that good? The character models in the opening cinematic for ODST are almost laughable, I seem to remember people having better faces in Halo 3. It doesn't help that the main guy in ODST looks like a chubby douchebag version of Drake from Uncharted. Chairman Meow, are we XBL buds yet? I'm "FortNinety" in case anyone was wondering. Yep, my gamertag is Presley.Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on September 28, 2009, 06:32:54 PM Oh yeah! Sorry, I have a hard time keeping track of certain things.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 29, 2009, 02:25:10 PM Presley, you dropped out just as I went into the Action Sack playlist, which is a shame because it's full of fun, strange game types. I played a bit grifball, team sumo, dodgeball, team scuds and some others in there. We should try out doubles next time.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: Chairman Meow on September 29, 2009, 02:42:19 PM My internets got shut off for the day for "maintenance", at least that's what the phone rep was saying. Although now I know the new forums are mobile-browser friendly.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: ryan on October 05, 2009, 01:35:41 AM The lack of matchmaking for ODST's multiplayer is annoying as hell. None of my friends have picked it up yet, so I'm stuck twiddling my thumbs until someone comes over or I luck out and they drop $60 for Halo 1.5 (badda-dum).

Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: sonictail on October 14, 2009, 10:19:50 AM Well I've been organising firefights with my friends over live and it's by far the most fun part. Fucking invisible monkeys with jetpacks >.<
Plot wise the single player isn't bad and the flashback / setpiece sequences are a nice touch. But again I always play co-op for halo as it makes it far more fun. Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on December 14, 2009, 04:46:16 PM Time to exhume this thread with...

Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on April 30, 2010, 04:19:59 PM Oh, hey, let's team up and play. I got my key yesterday evening, and have played a bit. Then there's this semi-helpful instructional vid for us noobs, hosted by an "African American female"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQvo8DmQkao Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on May 03, 2010, 04:08:10 PM They probably toned some stuff down so that they could run more polys in the character models and so they could have more characters on screen at once.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: FortNinety on May 11, 2010, 11:00:29 AM Hey Dave, did you hear about the dudes that simply wouldn't stop playing Halo 2?

Bungie gave them Reach beta codes. That's funny that there are just two left, still holding on. I'm glad Microsoft hasn't kicked them.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on July 29, 2010, 12:50:42 PM We haven't talked about Reach enough. This game gets more promising all the time. Check these out:

Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: dmauro on September 17, 2010, 06:01:10 PM Picked this up yesterday. Pretty sweet, but the campaign was just not as cool as Halo 3's. At one point there are some Scarabs, but you don't even get to destroy them. Nothing terribly wowing, although the story was pretty good considering that was no MC and minimal Cortana. Mostly just psyched on the multiplayer this time around.
Title: Re: Just Another dmauro Halo Thread Post by: Chairman Meow on September 23, 2010, 06:18:55 PM Hey, Bungie figured out how to model and animate faces finally! Also, the lighting in Reach can get pretty delicious, particularly the scene right after that biddy dies.
