Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: scratchmonkey on September 03, 2009, 02:40:45 PM first, let there be weirdness: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/09/03/the-fallout-3-marriage-proposal/ yo, whatevs. Similarly, there was a guy who used a romhack of Chrono Trigger to propose to his girlfriend, with the caveat that the girlfriend wasn't really into videogames (supposedly, this sort of information is always going to be extremely difficult to pin down), this resulted in a discussion on sb.net as to whether this was romantic or an indication of how nerds are strangely selfish with their obsessions. (My interpretation of "probably both" was, properly, not very popular with anybody.) Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dhex on September 04, 2009, 09:23:42 AM it's romantic, kinda...in intent? i don't really think ignoring your partner's actual tastes/worldviews is particularly romantic but the wedding-industrial complex would say otherwise, clipboard in hand.
speaking of romantic: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/09/04/axe-based-chops-assassins-creed-ii-trailer/ ok not romantic, fucking ridiculous. apparently you not only get a flying machine from leonardo davinci but you suffer anti-aircraft fire in medieval italy. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: ryan on September 04, 2009, 03:31:07 PM I purchased the Might & Magic VI Limited Edition last night, and then promptly got my ass kicked in 4+5. I'm going to start with 3 instead, after hearing that it isn't too hard to adjust to and is a pretty good primer for 4+5 and, from what others have said, the peak of the series with 6. This is actually a really good deal, because I picked up Might and Magic: Millenium Edition off of Goozex - includes 1-7 - and had a really hard time getting them all to run properly.
Good Old Games also has a Buy 1, Get 1 Free with Interplay titles. I think I might use this chance to pick up the Descent 1 + 2 and Descent 3 + Expansion bundles. I've also been reading on 1UP that a Japanese company wants to revitalize the Wizardry brand, and so far they have versions for the PS3, PC (MMO), and I believe the DS in the works. There are a handful of Saturn, PSX, and PS2 Japanese-only Wizardry titles as well, but the new set should be coming here. Fingers crosssssssssed. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dhex on September 08, 2009, 09:46:04 AM i haven't cracked into them yet, because of prototype. i also have a bunch of other games to play now and my game playing window is slowly closing. ah well.
anyhoo: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/09/07/ten-things-that-videogames-need-more-of hell yes on #3. more fallout, please. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dhex on September 08, 2009, 10:02:21 AM and this is why my far cry parody failed.
http://critical-gaming.squarespace.com/blog/2008/1/9/look-dont-touch.html Quote In the first twenty minutes of playing BioShock, the player is forced to exist through the masculine context of a first person shooter when he/she acquires the pistol. Guns are commonly thought of a phallic symbols of masculine power, and being set in a game and a world where the perspective is aligned down the sights of one’s weapon centers the point of view to one of violence. the final sentence isn't untrue, mind you, but it is also along the lines of criticizing feminist theory for focusing on women. this doesn't stop people from doing both of these things, of course. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dmauro on September 08, 2009, 04:06:19 PM The thing about your far cry article is that I could show it to people that don't play video games and know much about them and it would probably be very insightful for them. I mean, you did a great job with it (my favorite part was the bit about how the bodies despawn but the guns don't :)
Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: ryan on September 08, 2009, 10:37:24 PM That was a painful, painful read. Look, I'm making a POINT. This POINT leads to another POINT, even though I'm stretching it doesn't matter because I have POINTS to make. The entire thing is painfully trite. Sociology 205 is going to blow their mind.
Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dongle on September 09, 2009, 06:14:01 PM man feminism hasn't been about that sort of thing for over a decade.
that's the sort of writing that makes people think feminism is irrelevant. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dhex on September 10, 2009, 10:25:49 AM oh dongle, the academy is a different kettle of fish. just ask liz.
all sorts of irrelevant things are incredibly relevant there. Title: Re: the pc thread Post by: dhex on September 11, 2009, 10:43:26 AM http://www.doublebearproductions.com/?page_id=7
