Title: Shows in the Year of Our Fnord, 2010 (And Looking Forward To 2011 As Well)
Post by: isfet on August 22, 2009, 11:15:28 AM
MY SUBJECT

SO POETIC

ok, i dunno, i thought we had a topic for concerts but maybe that disappeared and was never recreated?  if there is one and i can't find it for some reason, then someone feel free to merge this post with the other.

anyway, here are some shows i THINK people here might wanna see:

Sunday August 30th -AFTERNOON- @ 979 BROADWAY BACKYARD

:: LIGHTNING BOLT
:::: Teeth Mountain
:::::: Talk Normal
:::::::: Hot Box

| 979 BROADWAY BACKYARD |
979 Broadway btwn Myrtle Ave & Ditmars St | Bushwick, Brooklyn
JMZ-Myrtle, L-Jefferson, G-Myrtle-Willoughby | DOORS --3PM-- | $12 | all ages
RAIN OR SHINE

seriously, all of you need to come to this.  they did it last year and it was awesome and i want all of you at this Lightning Bolt concert or i'm going to be kind of not really bothered but maybe slightly sad.

Friday September 25th @ MARKET HOTEL

:: WAVVES

| MARKET HOTEL |
1142 Myrtle Ave @ Bdwy | Bushwick, Bklyn
JMZ-Myrtle, L-Jefferson, G-Myrtle/Willoughby | 8pm | all ages | $tba
| MYSPACE |-- http://myspace.com/markethotelnyc

Saturday October 31st - HALLOWEEN @ MARKET HOTEL

:: MT EERIE ----------- aka the Microphones
:::: Liturgy

| MARKET HOTEL |
1142 Myrtle Ave @ Bdwy | Bushwick, Bklyn
JMZ-Myrtle, L-Jefferson, G-Myrtle/Willoughby | 8pm | all ages | $tba
| MYSPACE |-- http://myspace.com/markethotelnyc

Friday November 27th @ MARKET HOTEL

:: Fuck Buttons
:::: Growing

| MARKET HOTEL |
1142 Myrtle Ave @ Bdwy | Bushwick, Bklyn
JMZ-Myrtle, L-Jefferson, G-Myrtle/Willoughby | 8pm | all ages | $tba
| MYSPACE |-- http://myspace.com/markethotelnyc

for anyone unfamiliar with the Market Hotel, it's a small DIY type of venue located in Bushwick/Bed-Stuy (i dunno it's hard to tell on Myrtle-Broadway) right off the JMZ.  it's not exactly pretty to look at, but the sound is always good and the venue is just the right size to fit enough people but still be intimate.

So Joe, you're seeing NIN again this week, right? How many times has it been thus far? 8 or 9?

Title: Re: Shows in the Twilight of '09
Post by: isfet on August 22, 2009, 11:33:31 AM
i honestly have lost count by this point.  it easily has to be at least the eighth or ninth time i'm seeing them live.  but yea, i'm seeing them on Wednesday.  the last last show in NYC.  i know no one around here really digs NIN very much (or digs them enough to follow them the way i do), but this is probably going to be a weird show for me.

the main reason for it being the "last" show is apparently financial.  with his current business model, Reznor can't really turn the same type of profit (or any) by touring the way he used to.  knowing him (in the superficial "i read your interviews" way), i doubt this is really the last tour.  i think it'll be the last tour in terms of this grandiose rock band live on stage with flashing lights and smoke and general Rock(tm) absurdity.  but i think it would be naive to assume he will never perform live again in some capacity.  also considering that he still plans to make music (possibly even under the NIN moniker), i don't see how it can't happen.

it's a good venue.

larkin grimm has a nice voice. amber asylum is pleasant, if boring. i can take or leave lungfish.

two days? dang. zorn and laswell are quality stuff at least. the crowd, i'm sure, will be fantastico.

Joe, Julia that you met the other night (if you weren't black out drunk that is :P ) is a huge NIN fan. She still carries her school girl crush for Trent Reznor. She was pretty envious to hear you went to both "final" shows.

Title: Re: Shows in the Twilight of '09
Post by: isfet on September 01, 2009, 12:56:30 PM
hah!  that's pretty funny; well if i meet her again i'll be sure to discuss fanboyish Trent Reznor data with her.

also, i always feel bad when i meet someone and i'm piss drunk.  i have a recollection that i met this girl and that she was a blonde, but really don't recall anything that we talked about or even her name until you mentioned it just now.

second impressions are the most important!

I'm looking forward to having cringe-worthy conversations with O.T.O. members.

the crowd was fine except for that dude with the sports coat and he took himself out of the game with a self-inflicted drinking injury.

that was some damn fine boredoms.

almost makes up for the animu.

joe: dunno if you saw the flyers but sunn and pelican are playing a show with earth at the brooklyn masonic temple on the 22nd. i'm not going but i know you luv earth. (as any right thinking american would)

They mostly got on my nerves, and something quick and fierce, when you guys all went for a smoke, when all of a sudden I was surrounded by a ring of jerk-offs who wouldn't shut the fuck up while Lichens was getting starting. It was all "this is soooooo cooooooool man" and "is he the Boredoms?" and "what the fuck is he doing" and "dude, I just got tagged in Facebook, look". Who all somewhat disseminated by the time you all showed up, of course, but hence why I was in such a pissy mod when you found me Mike.

Plus, sports coat dude standing right in front of me, giving me less than half an inch breathing room, despite the fact that my immediate surrounding was hardly dense, I guess is further proof that I simply attract douchebags at any show. As bad as it was at Terminal 5 last night... which honestly wasn't horrible... imagine how it is for me when I got to, say, Union Hall? Which is why I hardly go to live shows anymore.

But yeah, last night's performance was fucking awesome.

Hey, I made it. It was a good show, Health is much more of a noise band live than they are on record, with many sections that went closer to grindcore than anything else. Overall there wasn't a lot of differentiation between songs, it was more of a constant meditative throb of noise. Their drummer is amazing.

Crowd was very hipster-y. Far more than I've ever seen at any other show.

Title: Re: Shows in the Twilight of '09
Post by: isfet on September 12, 2009, 09:32:43 AM
yea, i saw Health a few months back at a DIY venue not too far from where i live.  there live show is definitely a bit more intense and industrial-sounding.

and i assume the hipster-y crowd probably stemmed from their Pitchfork and Crystal Castles connections.

OCCULT USA: THE PROCESS CHURCH OF THE FINAL JUDGMENT
RITUAL AND SALON
at Anthology Film Archives, New York City

*ONE NIGHT ONLY*
Featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge as the "Sacrifist," Timothy Wyllie, Adam Parfrey, and The Sabbath Assembly band performing original Process Church songs

Was The Process Church truly "one of the most dangerous Satanic cults in America"? Or were they an intensely creative apocalyptic shadow side to the flower-powered '60s and New Age '70s? Scores of black-cloaked devotees swept the streets of New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and other cities selling magazines with titles like Sex, Fear, Love and Death, and a controversial theology proposing a reconciliation of Christ and Satan through awareness and love. Marianne Faithfull, George Clinton and Mick Jagger participated in Process publications, and Funkadelic reproduced Process material in two of their albums.

The inside story of this legendary group has at last emerged with Feral House's LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH by Timothy Wyllie and other former members.

TONIGHT, to celebrate the recent release of LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH, Feral House, Process Media, and Sound@One present a simulation of an actual Process Church “Sabbath Assembly” ritual, featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge as the "Sacrifist." Author Wyllie (Father Micah) will follow to discuss the cult and his time within it in a multimedia presentation.

THE SABBATH ASSEMBLY BAND, comprised of Robert A. Lowe (Lichens), Kyle Forrester (Crystal Stilts), Jex Thoth (I Hate Records), Laura Leontine, Sophie Gonthier (Anything Maria), and David Christian (of No-Neck Blues Band), will perform Process hymns and songs throughout. Join us!

so Fitz, did you go to that?  i considered it, but...wasn't sure if anyone else was gonna go?

so, some more show updates!

according to Market Hotel's website as well as Todd P's, it appears that Fuck Buttons is no longer playing there late in November.  it now simply says "TBA."  this either means that...maybe that want to hide it?  or, i assume, the show is canceled.

either way, Fuck Buttons are playing November 2nd (very soon!) at the Bowery Ballroom.  tix are $15, which is pretty reasonable for what will probably be a very good show.  wanna hit this up Mike?  i know it's almost THAT TIME, but i assume this show would be more doable than the one that was to happen later in the month.

new Todd P show that we need to go to:

Friday October 30th @ ABOVE THE AUTO PARTS STORE

:: LIGHTNING BOLT
:::: TV Ghost

| ABOVE THE AUTO PARTS STORE |
600 Bushwick Ave @ Jefferson St | Bushwick, Brooklyn
JMZ-Myrtle/Broadway, L-Jefferson | 8pm | $tba | all ages

Dave is off the hook this time since he went, but seriously, if you haven't seen Lightning Bolt (or haven't in a while) i'm requiring you to come to this show.

lastly:  Melt Banana is playing Bowery Ballroom on November 23rd.  tix are $15.  not really familiar with these guys, but i assume i should be and also assume i'd like them.

yea, thinking about it after i posted, i figured it's probably way too close at this point.  well, anyway, i'll let you know how the new stuff sounds.  kind of disappointed that the Market Hotel show is probably a no go, though, as i really think that's probably my favorite venue overall.

(Re: Health) and i assume the hipster-y crowd probably stemmed from their Pitchfork and Crystal Castles connections.

Crowd was very hipster-y. Far more than I've ever seen at any other show.

Besides you guys, I've only heard young NYU hipsters talking about Health while dissing Crystal Castles. I think that might be a big part of their fanbase :?

Maybe this isn't the right place to mention this, but Toups is in town this week with his band, for CMJ. He wants me to check him out, at least, and I'm assuming the invite is extended to the rest of us.

Haven't followed up with the guy just yet... to be honest, this week is kinda bad for me, but you never know. He's a nice enough guy, SB aside.

a new challenger appears!

so November 2, at Santos Party House, Green Jelly (aka Green Jello [yea, really, those guys]) will be playing a reunion show.

now, for the record, i'm not super into them, but the novelty of such a show definitely intrigues me.  unfortunately it's the same night as Fuck Buttons.

Saw Boom Boom Satellites last night. Took Joe with me, figuring that he'd have a grand old time. Unfortunately, the two opening acts were by far the worst in the history of music and audio in general. The first band was just generic pop punk bullshit, which paled in comparison to the offensiveness to the piece of shit Staten Island guido that stunk up the stage afterwards, who simply lazily rapped over Garageband loops. Cuz nothing screams musician more than some asshole whose face is perpetually buried in an iBook.

Dude was so bad that Joe had to bail, and I can't blame him. Thankfully Boom Boom made the wait worthwhile, because they were pretty awesome. They played a decent mix of old and new (most folks can't stand the new stuff, and I can't blame them, but I don't passionately hate it either). It also finally dawned on me that I kinda have a thing for tiny, demure Japanese girls who can fucking drum like the devil. I know have to go back and figure out if all those songs which I thought featured drum machines was just this woman.

Fuck Buttons tore shit up.  in a way i'm happy i missed the Bowery show and went to this one.

so not really a show so much as a party, but apparently every Saturday for the next few weeks, some guy called "Mr. Saturday Night" is hosting parties at Market Hotel.  and, apparently, open beer bar between 10-11pm?  this sounds like something that might be fun.

"help Michael Yaniro of Twin Stumps recover from attack - benefit show Friday (Pink Reason, Sightings, more)"

Quote
As you all may or may not know, a dear friend of mine named Michael Yaniro was a victim of violent robbery in the Ridgewood area of Queens (NYC). He was savagely beaten beyond recognition, and now he's got a long road ahead of him with many surgeries. To add insult to his injuries, he has no medical insurance!

A brief description of his injuries: His right eye socket needs surgery as there is a bone protruding into it... so it needs to be repaired to restore his ability to move the eye. (He has had this surgery, and will need more work in the future). He has a fractured jaw and nose which will require surgery to repair, as well as multiple broken bones in his face. Pieces of titanium metal is to be inserted in his face to support the bones.

His girlfriend Abby is trying to get him Emergency Medicaid, but that is really tough to get approved, and its doubtful whether or not it will be rewarded. That is why this fundraiser was started. Its not registered as non-profit organization (so if you're looking for a tax break, this is not the time and place for it), but as a way to possibly raise a little money to help him through his crisis.

that really sucks.  and to be honest, i haven't heard stuff like this in Ridgewood very often, so i'm really curious to know the details of the assault.

anyway, i plan to go to this for a number of reasons, but one of them has to do with the bands:

"The latest show is scheduled for Dec 4th (Friday) at Death By Audio, where Pink Reason, Sightings, York Factory Complaint (featuring Genesis P-orridge), and White Suns are all on the bill. "

anyone else wanna hear some tunes tonight?

If being bored by the church you were raised in wasn't enough for you now you can be bored by a bunch of crypto-spermaphagists!

Listen to a rambling liturgy written by a tone deaf junky!

See unappealing naked people!

Eat baked goods whose ingredients you do not want to know!

That's right the Tahuti Lodge of the O.T.O. (http://www.tahutilodge.org/santospartyhouse_masses.php) is now doing their Gnostic Mass the first Sunday of the month at Santo's Party House.

It's too bad really.  There's a few gems in Crowley's overall output.  The O.T.O. remake he did, unfortunately, was not one of them.

also, Janelle Monae is going to be playing for free at Highline Ballroom next week.  just RSVP

Faith No More is coming to town this weekend, fyi. And yes, I know it's not the original line-up, don't care. Never seen them before, so I should be happy regardless.

I'm going to the Friday night show. Anyone else game?

I'll be at this on Sunday: http://lepoissonrouge.com/events/view/1422

Pretty indifferent about Xiu Xiu...but Merzbow, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!  Gentle is also playing and judging from what's on their myspace, sounds like they have some potential

edit: I won't be going, but for those interested, I found out Shonen Knife will be playing at the Knitting Factory in BK on Tues night - http://bk.knittingfactory.com/event-details/?tfly_event_id=13137

Katie and myself are going. Unfortunately, I'll have to skip on the pre-game (will be at the New York Comic Con immediately before... lol).

dhex,

Merzbow was really great, he played alongside a (Belgian?) drummer whose name escapes me, which complements his harsh, metal-y style perfectly imo.  It was also my first time seeing him so I can't say how it compared to his other live acts. I know he played a 2-set show at Issue Project Room just a few nights before that one, so there was plenty of Merz lovin' to go around.

My only complaints was the set wasn't long enough (for me..) and I missed seeing Gentle, argh (only sort of my fault)

neat!

fitz: i think sadly the pink dots best days are behind them. dunno if you've heard recent stuff, but it's damn far down the prog wormhole. i'm glad i saw them when ryan moore was drumming for them.

1) anyone got any good pregame suggestions for ft. greene? round the masonic temple would be best. (isn't that always the case?)

2) on sunday you guys should come to coco66 in greenpoint and see me and joe absolutely bomb in front of an audience expecting comedy and fun times rock and roll.

I actually live around Clinton Hill... while I don't think I could wholeheartedly recommended any place, Alibi on DeKalb might actually fit your bill if you are just looking for drinks: http://www.yelp.com/biz/alibi-brooklyn

The visit should produce a cheap drink and at least one entertaining story

Also some decent food to be had in the area ..

polish cop fighting brew doesn't match well with food (i'm presuming the beer selection will be the same from throbbing gristle) so a cheap beer or four is all i'm looking for. thanks.
