Title: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: FortNinety on July 10, 2009, 05:06:46 PM Or maybe just the 2D variety? Got BlazBlue the other day, and Jesus, am I ever fucking bored of it already. And I'd like to think that it's maybe not just because they've become so cumbersome to play and that I suck at them. I'm all up for things not being just Street Fighter-esque all the time. I honestly believe if I sat down and tried learning, I'd get somehow good at it, but the desire is totally gone. Not sure why.
KOF XII comes out real soon, and I should maybe be jazzed (okay, maybe not, since I've never been the biggest KOF fanboy in the world), but am not. Like so many things, I'm in love with the concept of fighters, especially ones featuring beautifully animated sprites, but in concept alone. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: Llydis on July 10, 2009, 06:26:26 PM I'm not really good at 2D fighters myself. Especially since fighting tends to get right down to the frames of animation characters have.
I prefer 3D ones too, but then again it was Virtua Fighting 3 Team Battle and Soul Calibur that made me like the genre in the first place. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: isfet on July 12, 2009, 03:29:24 PM seriously
ok, but actually, i think this reaction is normal and something we're going to sort of see across the internet on a grander scale. i think a lot of these newer, flashy fighting games managed to bring back a lot of people to the genre, but once they realize that it's essentially the same old same old (difficult to learn from scratch and more difficult to master), fighting games will go back to being the lonely little genre they were a few years ago. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: ATOMU on July 13, 2009, 01:38:24 AM or it could be that blazblue is incredibly fucking bland
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: dmauro on July 13, 2009, 02:04:32 AM I don't know, I'm pretty into SFIV. I think it's just that I don't want to play a game that moves so quickly that you don't have any time to learn from your mistakes, and also I hate combos. Sure, I used to play a lot of Killer Instinct, but we all make mistakes.
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: FortNinety on July 13, 2009, 02:18:23 AM BTW Joe, regarding our conversation this past Friday, I'm fairly certain that BlazBlue cosplay will be outnumbered by Persona 3/4 cosplay at Otakon by about 1000 to 1.

Blazblue's become pretty popular with upper-echelon cosplayers but P3/4 has the "that's already in my closet! / i have that haircut!" factor. Not to discount the impending zerg rush of Taokakas. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: FortNinety on July 13, 2009, 02:46:12 AM As you and pilot (that's the gf, btw) already know, I have a thing for Chie, and since there will be literally dozens running around next weekend, that translates to plenty of "about the author" photo opportunities for the next zine. Which will be even more creepy this time around since unlike the last time I was at Otakon, I've past the age of the 30.
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: isfet on July 13, 2009, 11:12:08 AM or it could be that blazblue is incredibly fucking bland all right, i seriously don't get this. you're the second person i've heard say this (the first being Matt), but i really don't understand what it's supposed to mean. i don't think Blazblue is a better fighting game than 3rd Strike or Virtua Fighter 5, but i don't understand how a game where every single character plays entirely different (aside from the Cloud clone and the bishounen soldier guy) from the typical fighting game is bland. and when it comes to combos, this game is closer to to Capcom's Vs. series than it is to Killer Instinct. it's not dial-a-combo so much as it's a game where characters have very little recovery time between moves which allows them to attack very quickly and link a lot more moves together much more easily than in the regular Street Fighter series. at the very least, the game is a lot better than Guilty Gear XX #Reload Alpha Gaiden Turbo Jet but on this board, i'm pretty outnumbered when it comes to liking this game, so let's drop it and i can come back when i need to explain why KoFXII doesn't suck. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: dmauro on July 13, 2009, 12:35:33 PM Of course when KOFXII comes out I'm going to complain about how boring the character designs are.
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: FortNinety on July 13, 2009, 01:04:49 PM I don't think the KOF characters themselves are nowhere near as bland as those in BlazBlue, but most have the benefit of being around for much longer. Meanwhile, no matter how finely detailed they might be, BB's cast is every single animu-influenced fighting character stereotype one can imagine: dude with long red trench coat? Check. Gothic lolita chick who likes cats? Check. Actual cat character? Check. Strange, otherworldly creature who might be a science experiment? Check. Blond chick that's militaristic? Check. And so on...
Meanwhile, I simply have a beef with how certain KOF XII characters are rendered, ESPECIALLY Athena, and the lack of other faces, like Kula Diamond, but I guess we can save all that once the game hits, whenever that might be. Since Ignition is publishing, don't be surprised if it magically gets pushed back to 2011. And I'm being pretty serious here. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: isfet on July 13, 2009, 01:19:06 PM i can't help but think that KoFXII is being pushed back so it won't do even worse than it already will. considering all the fighting games out right now (Mark of the Wolves, Blazblue, MvC2), it sort of makes sense to hold it off a bit. but i hear the netcode is probably going to be horrible, so...well, hey, i'll enjoy it as much as i can i suppose.
see, the thing with BlazBlue's character design is that i don't really care what they look like. it looks like anime. most anime looks like anime. what makes it interesting to me is that it plays different. i don't like SFIV very much because essentially the entire cast is made of returning characters. and the new ones either suck or have their own host of issues. it's boring in that if i wanted to play as one of those returning characters, i would rather choose another game they've appeared in that's more fun to play. i'll probably like SFIV again when the third revision comes out. i agree with Matt on KoFXII, though; the cast leaves a lot to be desired. part of what makes KoF interesting is the variety it offers, and basically XII chooses the most generic characters that the series has offered in the past. there aren't even characters who had become staples, like K' or Mai (whose absence makes NO sense). with how amazing the animation looks, it's a shame they didn't use it on some of the more interesting members, like, say, Kula. as for the guy you spoke to who talked about how it plays more like '98 and there's no boss because it's a dream match, i call bullshit. it doesn't play remotely like '98. it's somewhere between one of the 2000s and a regular Fatal Fury game. as for not having a final boss, once again, bullshit. '98 was a dream match and it didn't seem to have any trouble including an impossibly beefed-up Rugal. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: FortNinety on July 13, 2009, 01:32:54 PM Ignition has a history of missing their intended release date, especially when it comes to SNK games, time and time again. Look at how long it took for them to release the PS2 version of KOF 98 Ultimate? Well over a year past the original date.
As for that dude you mention Joe, that was their head PR guy, so take that as you will. Perhaps he just said it cuz everyone knows that 98 is supposed to be the most popular and best one. I will agree with the SF2 Alpha comparison, due to the custom combo and all. And I guess that reinforces why I like it, since it's more of what I want, which is a bad thing to admit, since I too roll my eyes at the unwashed masses who still play Marvel vs Capcom 2 at Chinatown Fair, unable to risk losing a dollar and face to something new. Speaking, I am SO going to get MvC2 and play as cheesily as possible, if only to hear all the fanboys get up in arms via Live. Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: isfet on July 13, 2009, 01:36:37 PM i'm looking forward to MvC2 but sort of not. playing against people who have mastered the game isn't really fun
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: dmauro on July 13, 2009, 01:49:29 PM I just downloaded a trainer for SFIV today, so I have everything/everyone unlocked. Anyone want to come over and play some SFIV on the cabs? :)
Title: Re: ATTN: Isfet... And Everyone Else Really... I Think I'm Done With Fighting Games Post by: isfet on July 13, 2009, 02:00:47 PM oooo

I got rid of the emoticon-less smileys. Now I Just need to replace that flash icon. :) edit: done and fixed the annoying animated marquee button as well so that it's static. |
