Title: Your local library, now featuring Internet, music, movies, books, and games.

I've mentioned this a few times before, but my fiancee is a librarian for a pretty rough branch here in town. Well, last week she came home from work and told me that she had seen her first PS3 game returned. It was returned at the wrong branch, but she found out that two had started a pilot program of loaning out games. I checked online, and sure enough there are two listed as carring PS3, Wii, and 360 titles. Luckily one of the branches is literally down the street from me, so I went the next day and found their little game shelf, which consisted mostly of sports titles (Virtua Tennis 3 for PS3 and 360, Don King Boxing for Wii, and Motorstorm for the PS3 were there), but Guilty Gear for the Wii was in, and the website has five or so pages of titles, including Street Fighter IV, Animal Crossing, and the new Punch-Out. I checked out Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires.

Aside from a library carrying games seeming strange, she said that they are treating games as they do DVDs: you can have 10 out at a time and there is zero protection on the cases. I went to a self check-out machine, scanned in my items, and went out the door, so there is nothing stopping people from simply walking to the back and putting the disc in their pocket. I know at this point it's simply about getting bodies through the door, but I'm not sure how great this is from an allocation of resources standpoint. It's awesome for my wallet, though.

My take: 3 DVDs, 1 game, and 2 books.

at my library they have the empty DVD cases on the shelves, which you bring up to the front desk and they go to a wide file cabinet behind them where they keep the actual discs in clear plastic sleeves and put them in the cases and then check them out for you.

almost like gamestop, come to think of it.
