SEGA SATAN SYSTEM (part two of two)

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

So where was I? Oh yeah, it the middle of passing along a mess-load of Sonic related links! Here’s what you’ve missed, btw, just in case

- A VERY important head’s up: a couple of soundtracks are now available via the American iTunes store, with the definite highlight being the one for Sonic CD, the Japanese version!

For those of you that have been making do with the redbook audio from the original Mega CD release, like myself (I actually own an original copy, not to brag), it’s finally available at a higher, far more satisfactory bit rate. Too bad the epic Sonic 1 & 2 soundtrack haven’t come over as well, but beggars can’t be choosers.

- Man am I glad that the new Sonic Nendoroid is based upon the old school, slightly chubby version?

- Pretty much everyone’s seen this already by now, but since’re talking about the guy and all: Sonic running like an idiot.

- So Tails is in the upcomg XBLA port of Sonic CD? Eh, okay I guess.

- And Deathsmiles 2X sold a decent amount of copies? And Cave is thinking of releasing more games out here, via XBLA? I’ll take Ketsui please!

- I’m just as miffed that he’s not in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 either (though not nearly as much as some folks), but his appearance in Nova’s ending is at least pretty darn cute.

- Let?s Go! Burunyanman Portable looks hella fun, especially the part with the giant cheerleader boss, kicking up European looking houses.

- I’m really shocked that more folks haven’t made a bigger deal about the upcoming Scarygirl game. I can’t wait myself!

- Hyperdimension Neptunia was recently reprinted by Gamestop. Good luck finding a sealed copy at a store!

Most just ordered one, which they opened and gutted, so they could have the case on display (which one can’t find anyway under the 50 or so empty Modern Warfare 3 cases), and yet still sells it brand new, per Gamestop’s f*cktarded policies. God I hate that place.

- For those who haven’t heard, Udon is bringing over the Persona 3 & 4 art books to America! There’s also a collection that concentrates on the work of Shigenori Soejima, the primary illustrator behind Persona; that one is available this very second, and you take a look right here and right now.

- On that note, every time I see new screenshot from the Persona 4 fighting game, I fall more and more in love with it?

- The best part is how beautiful it looks in motion!

- I hardly know a thing about Frontier Gate, except how you can have swords and shields that look like Gradius ships, and that’s pretty nifty?

- Check out this part one and part two of incredible conversation between Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Horii, circa 1989. They reveal much about their games, with the highlight being how Zelda 3 was supposed to have a party, similar to traditional RPGs!

- As it turns out, Zelda for the Wii U will retain the same control’s as Skyward Sword’s. Great, guess I’m definitely getting one after-all.

- I personally don’t need this, but for those of you interested in the upcoming PS3 version of Gal Gun, but are afraid of what the girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/roommates/parents/children/social worker might think if they stumble across you playing the thing, rejoice! Because with a touch of a button, it disguises itself as a totally innocent 2D game.

- While on the topic of creepy games: which has the creepiest title, If I Were In a Sealed Room With a Girl I’d Probably XXX or Listen to Me, Girls? I Am Your Father? Tough call, I know.

- And don’t forget about Touch Shot Love Application! Be sure to visit the game’s website, in which you manipulate a fake iPhone application to molest girls “in real life”, thus the premise of the game (haven’t checked yet if it works on an actual iPhone).

- Sticking with the pantsu: all the undergarments in Final Fantasy Type-0, revealed. Thanks Square Enix!

- I wonder if anyone at Platinum, whose working on the new Metal Gear game specifically, was hired via this manga?

- This is how you play shmups with the Kinect?

- So there’s going to be a Persona stage play?

- This maid cafe sim looks pretty interesting?

Okay, just the part in which you get to photograph her as she rides a rodeo machine, in her underwear.

- Hilarious bug in Cave’s Instant Brain is? hilarious!

- Has there ever been a more interesting dichotomy? Flying machines that embody death and destruction, but with a paint job that simply screams “SUPA KAWAII!!!”

- Has anyone out there ever played Aquapazza? It’s this 2D fighter that NO ONE is talking about.

- So why do I all of a sudden care about Code of Princess. Because it has two folks who used to work on Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, and Mischief Makers, that’s why.

- Here’s a shocker: that blue, Dragon Quest meat bun they’re serving at convenience stores throughout in Japan are kinda gross. Still, aa million have been sold thus far. Yet another shocker.

- I simply cannot get enough of Uncharted X Harrison Ford?

- Sucks that GamePro is no more, cuz this link, of the 10 worst gaming shirts of all time was actually really awesome. At least I saved this image?

- Via Lamar, who as I type this sentence is taking a break from Mega Man by playing some Chrono Trigger (I offered him the chance to give Skyward Sword a shot, but he declined for various reasons)…

- As well as this?

- Thanks to Lamar, I finally know the artist responsible for the first image here! And awesome as that was, this is even better?

The artist, btw, is Bastien Vives.

- Hey, Mia just posted some Persona fan art for something I was somewhat privy to, back in the day…

- Another kind of head’s up: ThinkGeek’s Portal 2 shower curtain is half off this very moment?

- Considering my affinity for games from India, I’m naturally way intrigued by Irrational’s “Silent Hill meets Zelda meets Devil May Cry” turned into something starring some Bollywood chick.

- There’s a new game on the way for both the Neo Geo and Dreamcast, and I’ll take a shameless Turrican clone over another mediocre looking shmup any day of the week.

- Meanwhile, am super happy to hear that a sequel was in the works for 999. and the opening to Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die looks mighty fine indeed.

- I had no idea that the game Night Trap had a song called Night Trap that all the characters sing, in the middle of the game.

- Diddy Kong Racing X Kool & The Gang? Why the hell not.

- And Mega Man and Soulja Boy? Just this once.

- How about a bunch of Korean girls dancing to the battle music from Final Fantasy 4? I can’t tell if it’s from North or South Korea, could be either or.

- Canabalt on a Commodore 64? Your wish is some hacker’s command.

- For those that dig gorgeous, 16-bit backgrounds.

- Via Joe: I have absolute no idea what’s going on here, but some video game footage can be seen, so it’s relevant to this blog.

- Because it’s been a while since I featured any Gary’s Mod on this end.

- Despite not being a fan of the phone itself, I still can’t get enough of their ads starring Kristen Schaal.

- Perhaps you’ve already seen a few of those wacky mash-ups involving the pro wrestling interview mini game in Rhythm Heaven in various places. Well, this one, featuring the Old Spice guy, is by far the best one yet.

- Behold the Sega Satan System?

- “While at Gamercamp, I finally figured out how to hack a video game.”

- I was SO in love with Sonya Blade back in the day, especially from part 3?

- Since gamer tattoos make me cringe, here’s a decent alternative?

- This piece of Gradius fan art is simply magical?

- New wallpaper get!

- Same here?

- I normally find Katamari fan art to be totally boring at this point, yet this made me chuckle?

- Not sure what the story is with this, but me likes it nonetheless?

- I still love this ouija board by Olly Moss?

- And pixelated Bill Murray by Jude Buffman is absolutely brilliant?

- Via GamOvr?

- Once again, Famicom bootleggers have outdone themselves?

- Helpful info, no matter how commonly known, is still helpful info nonetheless?

- From the same source?

- I think its a submission to Cory’s Zelda zine, maybe?

- I never miss the chance to pass along Pulseman fan art when the opportunity arises (though it being by Ashley Davis is a definite bonus)?

- And a very nifty Christmas card from Ken Wong?

- This official Street Fighter 2 concept art is just too much?

- Mario Galaxy, 8bit Empire Edition, by Game & Graphics?

- And yet another, quite deft Super Mario Bros mash-up?

- Nice to anyone whose up for a challenge!

- Ever hear of Booby Kids?

- My new fave Tumblr: Animated Screenshots.

- And my new fave fashion blog: Mens Where (with plenty of “just in time for the holidays” tips)?

- This totally tiny Super Famicom, courtesy of Danny Choo is too cute!

- Given Danny’s affinity for Sony’s handhelds, and his fine photographic skills, I’m really looking forward to continued Vita coverage?

- Great shot?

- Good question?

- And, I wonder what’s happening here?

- Yes, the cover to the upcoming Onechanbara Z Kagura is very? crotchy (and the game as a whole, who don’t know, looks amazing; nice to see an installment with a budget at long last)?

- I am SO getting a Little Printer for my iPhone, if only because it reminds me of the Game Boy Printer!

- This Super Mario pinball game looks pretty awesome, though the fact that it’s super tiny is icing on the cake?

- Yet another neat NES/Fami hack is perfect for those who have a hard time drawing anything with an Etch-a-Sketch!

- Check out what happens with you add a GetLoFi Precision Oscillator to a Famicom?

- Something very similar to the thing above, courtesy of Albotas.

- A nice little reminder that fighting games are, you know, kinda racist sometimes?

- Damn, the DoDonPachi scarf is sold out?

- I wonder if these Game Boy gloves are still available?

- You know, as much as I love the place, this commentary on the crappy part of being a collector rubbed me the wrong way. Sorry, but you should seek and own games that you want, with zero regard for “status”. Otherwise, you’re simply a sucker for marketing ploys 101. Just saying.

- For those who missed it the first time around, Beck, Frank Zappa, and Billy Corgan, in the (virtual) WWE ring.

- It’s always nice whenever anyone pays homage to Yasushi Suzuki!

- How to “undress” your fave lady in King of Fighters (love the accompanying image, btw).

- I’ll save it for another time, but I have to say, one of the reasons why I’m still miffed that GSW is over is because I was really looking forward to resurrecting my video game cinema column, since there’s a mind-blowing amount of related content, mostly documentaries, either out right now or on the horizon. And quite honestly, almost all of them looks like crap.

That being said, the idea of yet another behind the scenes look at the competitive fighting scene/Chinatown Fair crowd is enough to make me want to gouge my eyes, but I still want to check out King of Chinatown, if only because I hear it portrays Isaiah “Triforce” Johnson as some kind of Don King-esque caricature, which honestly sounds like a hoot (though the comments in the Kotaku post seem to indicate that it’s rubbish after all).

- For those wondering, for an example of an upcoming video game documentary that actually looks good, I must once again refer to Ecstasy of Order.

- Once again, the thing I’m most proudest of, from my many years writing stuff for GSW, is my rundown of TNT Amusement’s legendary (if you live in Pennsylvania at least) informercial. Hence why I’m so excited to hear that the place is the center of a reality show that’s in the works! God bless Todd Tuckey.

- And finally, time for one last round of GSW links! Not from my myself, though; some are things I would have written about, if I had gotten the chance (in addition to all the nonsense above). Whereas the rest, I honestly have no idea where Eric and Danny found! But that’s why they’re the best. Like?

? There’s a new Kenta Cho’s game!

? Resident Evil sometimes pops up in the most unusual of places.

? At long last; the camera in Super Mario World, explained in great detail.

? Time once again for Zac Gorman, the true king of animated gif comics.

? Simply talking about Dezaemon Kids is one thing, highlighting the mention with a clip of shmup that’s designed to resemble Super Mario Land? Now that’s something truly special.

? First there was the game, and now there’s Enviro-bear 2000: The Movie.

? For anyone out there who wants to buy me a Xmas gift, I certainly wouldn’t mind this Cave art book!

? OMG, analogue OutRun is a work of genius.

? Too bad the Xbox dashboard is so busted, cuz, the Indie Games channel truly is a treasure trove of, um, stuff.

? With GSW being no more, where the hell are people going to get their Cheetahmen news?

mini arcade cabinets X Idolm@ster X an iPod Nano? YES.

? Behold the dumbest Castlevania ever.

? As most friends know by now, I’m a HUGE fan of Nigerian cinema (or Nollywood as its commonly referred to), though I’m starting to warm up to Ghanaian cinema as well

? By far, the most messed up “Game Over” ever.

? You know, the cancelled Battletoads game for the GBA doesn’t look half bad!

? And finally, maybe the cutest thing ever.

I guess that’s enough for now. Might try to do another link dump at the end of this month, covering the rest of December, and then make it a regular thing for reals. But that’s when I’ll be doing my end of 2011 wrap-up? Oh, never mind.

Anyhow, for those craving even MORE video game info and insigght, be sure to be on the look out for this week’s Fangamer podcast! Episode #101 to be exact, in which myself and Gerritt go over all the headlines from the month of November, and first part of December.

Once again, was late with the monthly recap, but in this case, wasn’t my fault!
