“In Japan, Cute Planes With Tits Won The War”

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

In this post:
1. just lots of random game related pics
2. and I mean LOTS

Hey, guess what turned out to be real after-all?

Even I have to admit that I was beginning to believe all the folks claiming that those leaked shots a few weeks back where totally fake (the only thing I’ve learned over the years is that people who try to play tricks on gamers are inherently lazy, and there was just too many elements for it be some gigantic hoax). Mostly because of the logo, which looked liked something a bootlegger would come up with. But this being Sony, of course that’s army of highly paid designers conceived.

All that being said: yikes. Sony seems to constantly out do themselves these days in regards to massively underwhelming and flat-out fugly looking hardware. This is even worse that PSPgo. Where the hell is that guy who designed the PSone? Hell, even the PStwo was fairly well executed. This new thing makes even the original PS3 look like a thing of beauty in comparison (actually, I’ve always liked the design, at least the all black, 20 gig model). Back to the new logo, I can’t believe I’m saying this: I prefer the Spider-Man the movies font. Now, I always said that if this thing was actually real, I’d rush out to get the original model, but that hasn’t happened yet. Mostly since it hasn’t been formally announced for America, and I might get the new version if the price is cheap enough. And even then… might just wait for the Persona 5 announcement.

Well, it’s been a while since my last gigantic rundown of all the notable video game related news and nonsense from the past couple of X that’s caught my eye and may have missed yours. And since my text file has way too many notes and links to pass along all at once, I’m just gonna present stuff in categories (again, organization seems to be key, and I’m happy that my efforts to tighten things up thus far have not gone unnoticed). And since I’m such a big fan of random images (I shit you know people; most of my weekend was spent online, going through countless image driven Tumblrs, mostly of the hipster and animu varieties), I’ll try to let the images do most of the speaking this time…

- Let’s get started with my personal favorite creepy corner of the internet (a great place to start with, I know), Sankaku Complex, which tackles the biggest problem with the just released King of Fighters XII, that being Moe Blob Athena. Here we have a before and after pic to illustrate the point…

… To be honest, the idea of a school girl with a less than traditional physique for an animu character, and one that’s somewhat more realistic to boot, is actually kinda awesome, especially a fighting game. But Athena? Sorry, but no nice. But I think the primary issue is her big stupid eyes. Then again, almost makes me glad that Kula Diamond didn’t end up in the game, to spare her the indignation.

- SC was also the first place to point out the differences between Final Fantasy XIII when it first premiered and how it’s actually going to look like

… Doesn?t seem like much, if any, but trust me, there?s a few. You’ll need to check the actual link to see the differences. Not sure who is more at fault here, Sony or Square Enix.

- Here’s something that was just posted on the forums this past weekend by our resident furry. I’s probably the greatest Mario related fan art ever…

- And here’s something Jason passed along, the response some goof got from Sega regarding a fairly retarded question

… Not that the response is any better, mine you. And what the heck are those stains? You’d think the author would have Photoshopped those out or something.

- Back to the forums, I previously mentioned a thread for Katie that’s all about cute crap, and in it I passed along a link to some Japanese DS game that Tiny Cartridge once pointed out that features puppies doing all sorts of wacky stuff, like holding boardroom meetings, going to fancy restaurants, and going to bars

- So early last month there was a Katamari wedding

- There there’s this

- Time to stop by the always awesome GameSetWatch for a tiny bit. For starters, check out this piece of concept art for a proposed Wii version of Mirror’s Edge!

- Next you have a very nifty Pac Man/Tron wallpaper, though the real money is the periodic table of controllers by the same artist…

- You know how games these days are all about telling you what to do in the middle of a game, despite how drop dead obvious it might be? Imagine is that same approach was applied to the past

- Remember Wacky Packs? Nuke Pukem is funny, but Monky Dung is funnier

- What’s cooler? Pikmin made out of Legos

… Or the Vic Viper made out of 3D beads?

- Speaking of Gradius, nabbed this from Original Sound Version; haven’t listened to it yet, but will soon…

- And sticking with shumps, oh man, there’s gonna be a Shooting Game Historica EX set that’s dedicated towards the ships of Thunderforce 5!

… Hopefully it’ll also include the Rynex from Thunder Force 4. As well as a Shooting Game Historica EX volume 2 featuring assorted spacecraft from Treasure titles, like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Silpheed.

- Meanwhile, the SP version of volume 3 is now available via National Console Support, and they just posted a ton of pics of the set, alongside the first version

… I’m assuming this is in response to all the people wondering how in the hell to put together some of the ships, specifically Raiden Mk-II, which was so confusing that I had to get Dave to help me, and even he had trouble. I also broke the plastic stand for the Star Soldier Ceaser, plus the alternate version of the In The Hunt sub is much cooler than the yellow one, so I’m hoping to be able to get just one or two somehow later down the road.

- Here’s a wacky screenshot of a rejected Mortal Kombat themed basketball court that was supposed to be an unlockable for NBA Jam or Hangtime

… Wow.

- This made the rounds quite a bit a while back, but for those who missed it, a European game cover featuring Cooking Mama and a bunch of other video game vixens, in the same style…

And here we have my personal favorite, Claire Redfield, isolated

- Reminds me of Claire when she was on the cover of the Official Dreamcast Magazine, alongside the dude from Power Stone…

- As spotted over at Offworld, the ladies of Nintendo, made all tough and sh*t

- I loves me some fake screenshots, especially when it’s for a GBA platformer featuring Salvador Dali

- Along with fake 2600 game carts….

- I know Brandon always gets the inside track when it comes to iPhone games, but if the final game looks as good as these screenshots, I will be both highly shocked and pleasantly surprised

- Then there’s this, which is still a game believe it or not…

- Check out these ultra cute Etsy prints!

- I haven’t watched any of There Will Be Brawl, simply because I just don’t have the time (each installment is around fifteen minutes, often more), but at least there’s these shots from the photo shoot

- Yet another look at Samus, but a far classier one, courtesy of Eric over at Tiny Cartridge…

- Just last night I was wondering if Illmatic Envelope/Illvelo was actually coming to America or not, and earlier this morning we get this

… Yeah, gotta agree with JC; that box art is pretty much the worst thing ever. But again, at least the game is coming.

- Meant to pass this along a whiles ago, but now that all of the DSi Art Style games have finally made it over (Nalaku just came out today as Precipice), it’s perhaps the right time…

- And this one’s via their Twitter and not on TC proper, have no idea why…

- What a Planet Terror LCD game would look like

- Related: Katamari Damacy LCD

… Yes, yet another Katamari related pic. I’m behind my quota.

- Check out a NES controller as a doorbell

… and one as a bar of soap

… But better than all those is this Famicom business card

- Or how about a Dance Dance Revolution alarm clock?

… Guess will wake someone up better than having to do the footwork to Butterfly via fingers.

- I must admit, as cheesy as it is, this still made me chuckle

- Back to the insanely stupid things that Sony does, here’s a taste of their brand new marketing initiative to get girls to pick up the PSP

… Guess anything is better than that horrific PSP ad of the white woman chocking out the black woman, an image so vile I’m not even gonna bother to try dig it up.

- Everyone knows how much I love cosplay, and here’s a cute pic from Katie of two girls dressed up as Ashley and Mona from WarioWare…

… And here’s one of some Final Fantasy folks “gearing up” you could say…

- Reader Matt Crane passed this one along, part of his Sesame Street Fighter series…

… You can check out a few others examples via his Deviant Art. I totally love Oscar The Grouch as Blanka.

- Time to wrap things up with a nice, healthy does of soul cancer! Via some hipster blog of all places (which to be fair posts some pretty rad YouTube vids and other neatness)…

… I’m fairly certain that I’ve mentioned Moe Moe Niji Taisen Deluxe in the past (the PS2/PSP version came out a while ago, and now it’s headed to the 360), but was simply taken by the blog entry’s title, obviously!

- And time to head on back to Sankakuc Complex for a question: can anyone guess the story this image was attached to?

… Believe it or not, but it’s wasn’t for the news of Idolmaster for the DS contained a trap-chan, but regarding Nintendo’s new Demo Play feature that they recently patented (for more information, simply click here).

- I find this one to be pretty cute…

… As is this one, once again featuring Idolmaster…

… Whereas this one is back to what SC is know all about…

EDIT Actually, I’m just going to spare myself the aggravation and simply pass along a link to it here. There’s no nudity, it’s just creepy. And once again, believe it or not, it accompanied a piece about the recently released DSi firmware update that disables all the DSi compatible flash cards that are on the market today.

BTW, the North American flavor gets released later today/tonight, so if you don’t mind losing the chance to play games for free in favor of posting ultra crappy resolution pics directly to Facebook, there ya go! And speaking of, as well as kinda old at this point, but SC as far as I know was the very first place to feature those pics of the Japanese vending machine that sold R4-type devices

- One last dose of creepy! This one most certainly needs to be shielded, since it’s very much NSFW.

- Finally, everyone loves “hiimdaisy”, and her latest work, a comic adaptation of Persona 4, is funny because it’s true…
