Into Centaurs? Wanna Be One?

by Matthew Edward Hawkins

Well its been like over two months since I picked out highlights from my message board, as well as anywhere else. So since we’re kinda behind, get ready for some truly old news, at least to some folks. The rest of you, in case you missed it…

For Those Of You Who Like Video Games

- For starters, obligatory Mother 3 thread number one and number two. I still stand by my comparison of Earthbound fans and Rush fans.

- Was going to do a review of Mega Man 9 but haven’t managed to put much time into it, and that’s because the time that was spent was not exactly enjoyable. So simply refer to the last couple of posts in the official thread for my two cents. But long story short: it’s too Goddamn hard.

- So Dave (Mauro) has been busy playing Ketsui Death Label for the DS, as well as Left 4 Dead, along with LittleBigPlanet. which I’ve kinda warmed up to it, though I still think the controls stink.

- And Katie’s been playing Mirror’s Edge. From what I’ve seen, as well as heard… I’m sorry, but the story is pure rubbish, and I completely agree with her when she states the game takes itself way too seriously.

- Hey, remember me ranting and raving about Crayon Physics Deluxe from my San Fran report? Well, it’s almost here.

- Come on everybody, let’s make a PS2 game!

- Did I ever address the Tokyo Game Show? lulz. Well, in my defense, aside from being super busy, folks like Kotaku was able to drag out updates for like three whole weeks afterwards.

But yeah, while I don’t particularly need a new DS, the DSi is kinda neat, albeit not quite as sexy in the looks department. Happy to hear of Sin & Punishment 2, another Mario & Luigi title, and especially No More Heroes 2, plus I still say it look too long to find out that it?s for the Wii. Glad to know that KOF XII is heading to all the major consoles (since its impossible to figure out why SNK does the things it does sometimes), as well as to finally see Noby Noby Boy (the new game by the creator of Katamari) in action, as little as there was. Also nice to know that I no longer have to kick myself for never picking up a copy of Klonoa 1 for the PSone (the Wii revamp looks pretty neat thus far). Finally, the idea of MGS4 on the Xbox 360 was further cemented and I can at last finish playing Cave Story, via a system whose display doesn’t give me a headache.

- Do Japanese gamers really care at all, or do us Americans simply care too much?

- Speaking of, via the Mortal Kombat vs DC thread: well, there goes my last remaining bit of interest in playing the final product.

- Via the neat Flash game repository: even though I felt Psychonauts was pretty overrated, I still really like Double FIne’s latest endeavor.

- Via the tatsunoko vs Street Fighter thread: so Viewtiful Joe has finally been revealed as a character. And thank God!

- Via the shmups on the Xbox 360 thread: if Deathsmiles ever comes out over here, it’s gonna look BEAUTIFUL. And apparently DDPDOJBLEX (as well as Thunder Force VI) are really going to?

- Via the agony and the ecstasy that was/is Sega thread: the former head of Sonic Team has a new game coming out and its supposedly for penguins. At least the soundtrack has the potential to be totally killer.

- Via the No More Heroes thread (fun-fact: I still listen to the soundtrack, at least selected cuts, almost everyday): some pretty sweet behind the scenes tid-bits

- Via the video game clothing thread: what’s worse, that Pac Man couture fashion line from last week or this dork with the knitted Mega Man cap?

- Via the Halo 3 topic, oh what could have been…

… BTW Dave, before you ask, nope, still haven’t gotten a copy yet.

- And via Dave’s 360 thread: yet another reason why Burnout Paradise, while still nowhere as amazing as part 3, is still pretty damn neat

- On my wish list of games I want this upcoming holiday season, I have a bunch of 360 titles (including Halo 3), some PS3 stuff, a few PSP titles, a bunch for the DS of course… but absolutely nothing for the Wii. And looking to Japan, there’s hardly anything either. Except for this game, since I loved Shadow of the Colossus so much.

- Regarding Spore, whenever anyone asks me about the game, I always quote what Dark Steve had to say: “It’s like the tutorial for a (much) fuller game that doesn’t exist.”

- I know these have been all over the place, but given my heritage, they never get old: what it’s like to be a gamer in North Korea.

- Too bad for Katie that the Hello Kitty MMO is PC only.

- So, graphics is a commodity. Confirm/deny. Answer: lol.

- And, the creator of Braid (Jonathan Blow) is apparently an a**hole. Confirm/deny. Answer: who give’s a rat’s ass. Seriously, hate to break it you people, but your favorite creative type, or just the guy or gal that made whatever you really dig, might in fact be a jerk-off. That’s just life I guess.

- Here we have a guy reviewing his own game and being rather harsh about it. Though the most interesting part has to be his take on 2D graphics, which he also employs.

- I pretty much for any chance to point and laugh at Gamestop. Like this one.

- Has anyone played Muslim Massacre yet?

- I should really add to this topic on Orbient, especially since I played it quite a bit, along with the other Bit Generations 2.0/Art Styles WiiWare titles.

- Katie finds it so cute that Dave keeps updating the Smash Bros thread as long as he has.

- No one gave a rat’s ass about the original topic, but I still find it neat: a top ten list of the greatest video game cars. And that atrocious pic of the Daytona USA stock car still pisses me off/makes me sad.

- Time for some random video game videos…

Here’s episode #70 of some insane person’s one man, fantasy wrestling video game super show.

WarioWare meets Back To The Future.

This trailer for Professor Layton 3 really makes me wish there was an entire animated feature of this stuff. That and part 2 really needs to get here pronto.

I just LOVE watching dumbass, harcore PC players totally lose their cool.

Here we have reference footage shot by the creator of the original Prince of Persia starring his kid brother.

…. And Space Invaders mixed with the animu.

For Those Of You Who Are Into Lots Of Other Things (like spandex)

- Onto the world beyond video games: apparently, a few folks would love me to take some acid.

- Sometimes quoting movie lines will totally get you nowhere.

- Wanna hear what its like inside Mike’s skull? Well here ya go.

- Think you have a good eye?

- Sometimes, designers come up with pretty neat stuff

… I guess this qualifies as well.

- Remember kids, you don’t make heroes out of warlocks! That means you Harry Potter!!!

- Guess this belongs in the video game section, but since I found it in the everything else portion of the boards, I’ll pass it along here: Shooting Game History volume 3 is here!

- Via the “Holy sh*t, THE FUTURE!” thread comes the next step in fast food technology.

- Another food related item, this time via the official food thread, the horror that is bacon brownies.

- Because every message board needs one, a booze thread.

- And, the obligatory Bea Arthur/pot thread.

- Yes, even though I no longer get paid to blog about cell phones, for whatever reason, I’m sill obsessed with them. Anybody out there have the Google Phone? Oddly enough, I’ve yet to encounter one in the wild yet. Also, I love (yet also hate) my iPhone and all, but anyone saying it’s the ultimate gaming machine, which Apple themselves loves to believe, is a complete dumbass.

- I know I’m kinda getting ahead of myself here, but here’s the start of what hopes to be a handy guide for those looking for that perfect gift this upcoming holiday season. Teddytaur anyone?

… I also think those CNN shirts are actually pretty funny too.

- Come on everyone, PUPPIES!!!

- Some bits and pieces from the movie thread: the trailer for Donkey Punch: the movie, there’s apparently going to be a Under Siege 3 taking place in space, I personally think the Star Trek reboot looks actually pretty neat (I know that I?m in the minority on this one), word that both Will Smith and Steven Spielberg might be involved in the American remake of Oldboy (once again, they’re changing the ending to something sci-fi-ish, like time traveling, you heard it here first), and how the American Akira might possibly be. Also, quick question: did anyone bother to see that Oliver Stone flick making fun of Bush? It was a total bomb, right? Gee, I guess I was the only person who thought paying $12 to see something that I already knew (that the President is an f’n nitwit) was a dumb idea?

- And regarding television, simply scroll half way down here to see an innocent best of clip featuring Knight Rider turn into some argument between myself and Mike about the golden age of television and the piss poor state that its in now, at least IMHO.

- Time for the really good stuff. First up…

This little girl will thrive in the new world order.

Is it avant garde cinema or just a really crappy television commercial?

A love letter to a departed friend… Biscuit the Gerbil.

So that’s what rappers are trying to say.

The tyranny of the trolls ends NOW.

This is why I feel I’ve totally missed my true calling in life.

Here we have a packrat attempting to mix hot dogs and peaches.

Give it up to Mean Green, doing this thing.

Check out the Dollar Menu Millionaire in action.

That’s 20 beers!

Time for some more rap, and a special message from BJ.

Spandex, nothing but spandex.

A scene from Bratz the Movie, made tolerable.

Hipster fashion 101.

It’s not CGI, the kid is just that fat.

After who knows how many thousands of years, someone has finally improved upon the blanket.

Time to jump with SIS KROSS.

In Japan, the cats know to play the theremin.

… What, even more rap? Yes, this time from Ecstasy performing his anthem in life, I Need A Plus Sized Woman.

… If you like video, and if you life pizza, then VIDEO PIZZA is for you!

… Sometimes Cartoon Network misses the mark and doesn’t okay the right thing. But sometimes they do.

… And I’m pretty sure everyone has seen this one already, but just in case. It’s kinda NSFW and totally hawt.

- Then you have the always popular assortment of random pics…

For Those Of You Who Live In The City

- Check out my new guilty pleasure.

- Some people are serious when they say the tap water around here is just as good as the bottled stuff. Truth is, it totally depends on your pipes, and if you live Manhattan, yours probably sucks too.

- And some people might think that Park(ing) Day is totally harmless and even cute. Harmless, yes. Cute, ummm…. But most definitely retarded.

- More and more people seem to be reading while walking these days.

- As well as acting like totally rude douchebags on the trains.

- Joe went and saw Smashing Pumpkins last week and… Billy Corgan and gang still act like pretentious twats? Gee what a shock

- Care to guess which sexy NYC blogger has a past with me?

- As previously noted, it would appear that most of the absolutely annoying/insane Obama fanatics all resides in Brooklyn, mostly Willamsburg. And the evidence keeps on piling up.

For Those Of You Who Have Access To The Secret Chamber

- Newsflash! Dan Brown is apparently not a very good writer.

- RE: Emma Watson becoming the new face of Chanel… Hey, at least it’s better than her posing for Maxim.

- Yet another Hermione topic, this time with a touch of Richard Dawkins!

- Hey, remember that three breasted prostitute from Total Recall? I know you do.

- Speaking of the stuff that people get off on. At least cute white girls covered in slime isn’t all that pretentious.

- Awesome Drunken Samurai topic #1 and #2.

- The headlines that make you go lol thread is going strong, as is the headlines that you go what thread as well. The SFW animated gif repository is going okay, and the NSFW counterpart has a new or two addition as well. Even the SOUL CANCER!!! topic has been trucking on, though the real hotness, FHW (F*cking Hermione Week) will unfortunately must be delayed.

… My theory has been that the new Harry Potter movie that Warner Bros is holding off on till next summer will eventually get leaked and then the party would go on, but someone at Marc’s birthday party explained to both myself and Dave (Roman) that a rough cut was assembled at one point, I guess to show studio executives what it was all about, and then promptly disassembled, for perhaps security reasons? Point being, there is no final cut and probably won’t be till the actual release date. Hmmm… So yeah, will have to wait till the summertime to get my Hermione-on.

I sat down and spent some time with Little Big Planet yesterday, the controls do suck balls. It makes sense as you’re controlling a sack filled with crap, but for something that requires fine motor control to pass, goddam it’s frustrating.
Also, lives. Sure you get four new ones at every checkpoint, but kicking you right back to the beginning? Fuck That!

Radius just blew my mind >.<

Urgh, I need to visit your forums more!

    Yes you should!

  • Marc

I laughed for about a minute over the “You can have…” poster. Yes, what else is there other than pizza, dogs and a dark movie or two? Thankfully, a lot! I appreciate and agree with the sentiment, though. Well, I’m off to overage eat.
