http://howtodestroyangels.com/home.html

the rumors/suggestions are that this is a project between Trent Reznor and his wife Mariqueen Maandig.  i've never heard her band before, i've heard mixed things, i'll check it out someday.

anyway, it took me a few seconds to figure out what this was, initially, from searching on google a bit.  the name is what intrigued me the most as it's...well, i mean, i don't know what to make of it.

he's obviously a fan of Coil's and has collaborated with them, but i never know quite how to feel about bands/musical acts that take their names from another artist.  but then again, it happens pretty often and doesn't necessarily reflect on the music (Radiohead's name from a Talking Heads song, list goes on etc).

i mean, it's a good title to steal, at least.  hoping the music manages to be interesting enough to justify it.

finally got a chance to check out the little video sample.  sounds fun.  not much else to really say at this point about it, i suppose, but i kind of wonder what direction it'll be going in.

hmm...

listening to it now.  i'd say it definitely sounds like Reznor's work A LOT.  which i mean...well, what else would it sound like?

it reminds me a lot of the material from the "Still" CD that he released years ago (which is a pretty excellent collection of reinterpretations of old songs + a few new songs).  maybe also a bit like some of the stuff on "Ghosts I - IV," particularly the kinds of synths used as percussive elements in the song.

Mariqueen's voice is pretty pleasant, though not exactly disctinctive in any particular way i'm able to discern.

though if you're like Mike, this might work out pretty well if you've enjoyed Reznor's production, but hated his voice/words.

curiousity piqued

it's very late 90s industrial downtempo with a girl singing-ish.

(i.e. collide comes to mind)

hm.  i can kind of see how it might conjure that sort of idea up a bit, but i think it sounds a little more subtle than something like Collide.

That video is great. Not in love with the music though.
The end of the video is completely broken on pitchfork tv. :/

so

the EP is now available for free on the band's website to download

OR

you can pay $2 for a FLAC version of it

i mean, thus far i'm enjoying it.  i'd say it's probably one of the more interesting things Mr. Reznor has done in a while.  worth the free listen, at least!
