This was passed along by a friend from High School.  Not sure if I'm going but I thought I'd pass it along as well.

I had heard about this possibly happening while at the NYC Zine Fest, which took place in the same venue, which turned out to be a really nice affair.

Though to be honest, I'm a bit skeptical of the whole thing. For those who don't know, it's mostly a response to the disaster that was the MoCCA art fest (anyone wanting details should just do a search on my site). So now everyone wants a cheap alternative, though I personally feel another reason why MoCCA was such a bomb was simply because it was too much of the same old, same old. Most cartoonists are looking to do smaller shows outside NYC, since not only is the same stuff showing up to be sold, but the same people are going to these things, leading to a heavy case of stagnation (though many involved refuse to publicly acknowledge this fact, which is a whole different issue).

Not sure if just moving things to Brooklyn will make things any better... but anything is worth a shot. I just emailed them for a table quote, so might be exhibiting there, who knows!

Got an email from the organizer, regarding table rates and the such...

Quote
$200 for a six foot table, three chairs $250 for an eight foot table, four chairs
+$50 to be located along the perimeter with a wall display

... Umm. While I like the idea of an alternative to MoCCA, being so expensive right out of the gate makes zero sense, especially for such a small space. Also, fifty bucks to hang shit on the walls? That's fucking insane.

well presumably if you aren't on the perimeter, you could bring in a 'wall' of your own to hang things on and put it behind your table, right?

People do that at shows all the time, and most folks, primarily the ones at the table directly behind them, generally find such behavior obnoxious since it always spills into their area. Personal space is always this constant quiet far, which for passive aggressive types, which is 99% of cartoonists, is also hilarious.

At a MoCCA a few years back, ex had this brilliant idea to erect a HUGE wooden trellis behind us that proved that structural engineering was not her forte. Plus she had brilliantly forgotten to bring the appropriate tools, so duct tape was used to keep things together. Not only were the people behind us pissed that this gigantic wooden "thing" was pushing into their zone, but there was also the fear that it was going to crush their skulls at a moment's notice. Not sure if she ever noticed or realized that I spent a good deal of that weekend apologizes to those folks in advance.

Basically, I am such a huge person against those.

I would think if it was something as simple as pvc pipe for a frame and a typical pegboard style construction, you might even be able to set it up so the person behind you could use it as well and thereby be thrilled, THRILLED I TELL YOU that someone as generous as yourself brought such a useful device (and extra hanging hooks) to an event of this nature.

But, I do get the general vendorRage that can (and does) happen when space is infringed. It's like they should just tape off the specific space everyone gets so there isn't any fighting.
