Title: The Animu Thread (dhex, no need to bother with this one)
Post by: FortNinety on July 12, 2009, 01:47:05 PM
Since I know definitely that I'm not the only person here that enjoys anime and manga (though I'm not gonna name any names, since some lurkers love their anonymity), figured it would be good to have a topic that's separate from "LOL Japan" which is all about cringing and head shaking. Since not every form of media from Nippon is about loli molestation. Kinda.

...Though as noted in my NYAFF wrap-up, it was a tad bit disconcerting/annoying that practically every single Japanese flick I saw dealt with perverts. But moving on...

So Evangelion, which is a modern masterpiece in many people's eyes (since it got so many people into contemporary anime, especially during it's heyday, and continues to be quite influential) is being remade into a series of theatrical releases. The first one either last year or two years ago is finally being released here, primarily on DVD/Blu-ray, though there might be a limited theatrical run here in NYC and other major cities. Though the American-ized trailer is a big turn off...

http://www.funimation.com/Evangelion/

... I wish I could show the original Japanese trailer as a comparison, but YouTube's search function sucks, and the place is just flooded with AMVs.

Anyhow, the 2nd movie comes out soon, and it introduces a new girl, who I thought had this decidedly different, but therefore nifty as a result, green plug suit...

But now it's been revealed to be regular looking and pink, which is somewhat of a disappointment...

... At the very least, it should still be green or something. Anyone, use this opprotunity to recommend and talk about your fave wackky jappy cartoons and funny books.

I'm okay with the pink, it ties her into the universe a little better, but then it clashes with her trainwreck of a robot. IDEK, Gainax. IDEK.

Furthermore,

So what's the story here? Does she have two plug-suits, or did people grumble when they first saw the green design, or was it just a super early concept? Do I even want to know what her robot looks like?

The idea of a new girl is something I'm not so down with, but at least she has glasses.

i enjoy things that are obviously anime, but i can't really say i'm a "fan" of the stuff since i find i really enjoy very little of the stuff (when you consider how much is out there).  the only series i'd ever consider recommending to someone not sold on it would probably be Lain and Cowboy Bebop.  maybe some of Ghost in the Shell: SAC, as that's basically Law and Order: FUTURE CYBORG OPS.

definitely interested in the Evangelion reboot, just to see if it's even more fucked up now or if, now that the creator is past all his suicide attempts, craziness and spite for his fans, it's a little more down to Earth.

from what i've heard, new girl is basically inserted as sort of a nod to the more recent female anime tropes that have come into existence since Eva first came around.  so...yea, i dunno.  at least it looks beautifully animated and will look great on my TV in Blu Ray Disc Format (tm Sony).

Welp.

I'm always sceptical of adding a new character to a remake but she's cute as fuck and has th-thigh highs...
As for the suits, considering that the green one has showed up in magazine scans and has a figure out, I doubt it got axed. Probably just has both. Wait and see?

I'm interested as to what tropes she represents, isfet? It seems like Evangelion had them all covered before.

The thing about anime is that there's a TON of stuff out there, most of which does not come out in America, not surprisingly, so you absolutely need to know the right places to check shit out. Thankfully, with the advent of the Flash video codec, along with BitTorrent, and an ever increasing number of animu dorks that are willing to flex their Japanese translation skills, it's so much easier to check what's available in Japan and at a much faster rate. Sometimes stuff that just aired there is available in English in only a few days.

One huge problem is that all of the major news sites that cover anime is positively worthless. Hence why you simply need to know people that are in the know, and who most importantly have good taste.

As for the creator of EVA, my trusted sources (i.e Japanese people who actually live and work in Japan) tell me that virtually everything you've heard about his volatile personality has been blown way out of proportion, mostly by fans who think EVA is this groundbreaking form of media, the same types who never bother to check out anything else from anywhere else (it's like people who only get their news from the Daily Show, i.e. complete idiots). It's awesome and all, but hardly original, in the same sense that nothing is truly original. Anyway, apparently the creator was initially turned off by being painted in such a negative light, but when he realized that it added further appeal and mysticism to his show, which in turn meant more $$$, he's just gone with the flow ever since.

Welp.

Wow, that is fucking UGLY.

i can't remember where i read the descriptions of the new girl and can't find them.  and i didn't pay close enough attention to really gather what makes her pandering...so...oh well!  but at the very least, no one seems too impressed with her or feels she adds a whole lot to the series at this point.

apparently the last half of Eva 2.0 really starts fucking shit up (in an interesting/good way).

and um, if anyone is interested in seeing the last 30 minutes of Eva 2.0... (http://www.mediafire.com/?mg3vqtnzzdd).  if that's a no no, tell me and i'll take out the link.  also, have a fan-sub to read along with:  http://roe2wade.command-q.org/

Personally, I liked Eva, but reeeally wished they had toned the kid down from being so emo and reclusive.  I understand that was his character and it was purposeful, but it just dragged on the middle episodes dut to it I felt.

I'm iffy aboutmovies and shit because I thought the series ended and all, you know?  What they gonna talk about?

But then again, I'm a hardcore Studio Ghibli fanboy, so meh.

But if youliked Eva, I'd defintely check out Teknolyze if you haven't already, similar vein.

Title: Re: The Animu Thread (dhex, no need to bother with this one)
Post by: isfet on July 12, 2009, 03:19:03 PM
i watched the first five to six episodes of Texhnolyze, but it didn't really grip me.  it's by the same people who made Lain, so i really feel like i should give it another shot one of these days.  but yea, just seemed a little less inspired to me, for some reason.

but re: the Eva relaunch, without spoiling anything for anyone who doesn't want stuff spoiled, it's basically a re-imagining in a lot of ways.  based on things i've read people saying, scenes are arranged differently, dialogue is seemingly switched between characters at times for different effects and...well, the way Eva 2.0 ends seems to indicate that 3.0 and 4.0 (or whatever the hell they'll be called) are going to be pretty much all new.

My attitude towards the redux is that, no matter what, the original show isn't going anywhere. It's not like they're going to magically disappear. Not much consolation for those who have the "once I see something, I can't un-see it" issue, but that's a bigger problem as a whole.

I too find remakes and revamps totally unnecessary and rather douchey, but this is Gainax we're talking about. The fact that the DVD/Blu-ray release already has a host of changes and improvements means that they're just doing what they've always done, and always will.

I know I was kind of a weird kid reading one of the sources, Childhood's End, when I was 11 but the ending of Evangelion, series and movie, didn't strike me as all that fucked up. All human conscious is about to merge into a single supra consciousness but one kid at the center of what set it off decided he didn't want his identity dissolved into the oversoul.

Seems pretty straight forward.

I'm curious if they are keeping the core Human Instrumentality theme roughly the same for the reworking.

i just cant comprehend why people like evangelion at all. now ive read that the japanese animation style is what it is because of the low budgets, so they reuse animation cells. but when a single cell runs for almost three goddamn minutes i just roll my eyes and say "come the fuck on."

I can't say I'm a major fan of anime, I like a few series but I hate it when people ask me to draw anime style for them.

Then again, my favorite series are SE: Lain, Ghost in the Shell and... The Vision of Escaflowne. I also enjoyed the .hack anime series(the first one, haven't seen //Roots yet) for what it was. Still haven't had the patience to actually play through all the games.

I think what pisses me off most about anime are it's fans. Not anime itself. Then again, I also get pissed off at videogame fans, and I play the damn things.

Would you recommend this book? I'm sort of a closet Eva fan and anything non-anime that deals with similar subject matter I can openly read on the subway would be fantastic.

Clarke has one of those old Sci-Fi writing styles that you either love or hate.  That being said it is a slim little book with a lot of interesting elements to it. It will also give you some idea of what the final form "humanity as latent angel" was to be taking which never quite gets hashed out in Eva.

It lacks the self-conscious masturbation habits, creepy cross generational incest and giant robots though.

drozdal & ATOMU, advice needed: I'm not exactly made of money, so I'm thinking of canceling my pre-order for the Teddy figure and putting that money towards Aeigs one. What do you guys think?

Title: Re: The Animu Thread (dhex, no need to bother with this one)
Post by: ATOMU on July 21, 2009, 03:28:18 PM
Short answer:
AIGIS. FUCKING AIGIS.

Long answer: It depends on the kind of animu trinkets you're in to. I love articulated figures and Figmas are really, really great ones and worth their price, usually. If you like having things to fiddle with on your desk and pose suggestively they're for you. I have met people who prefer unposable statues for jerking off on, if that's you, just buy one of the Aigis statues. But Figmas, man. Figmas are fucking awesome. You have to either really hate having to pose something or really love Teddie.

Also figma parts are mostly interchangable with eachother / other similar articulated figures (ie revoltech) so that's hours of entertainment. It's like legos but with schoolgirls.

Also, should you decide on her, I'd preorder on HLJ.com now because the prices are accurate to what they are in Japan and she's on Early Bird special. Figmas become varying levels of annoying to get and inflated if you don't snatch them up this way.

First off, thanks for the Hobby Link suggestion. Though my pre-existing pre-orders are through National Console Support, so if I was going to cancel out, I guess my replacement order would be through them as well (unless I opt for a total refund, which I guess is still possible).

It's indeed cheaper at Hobby Link, by $10, which to be honest isn't so bad, especially considering that those other P4 statues were so much more. I guess Aegis is considered more of an action figure, due to the possible nature, and therefor isn't as glamorous or something?

And I have no real preference towards or objection towards pose-ability. It's  just gonna just sit there on my shelf, though choosing what I want is pretty neat. Actually, I kinda hate seeing exposed joints or whatever, though that's not really an issue here, thanks to the design and color.

I might just keep the Teddy statue and order through the suggested site. I dunno... not really sure why I ordered Teddy in the first place; just got excited when putting down money for Rise and figured, what the hell. I think he's a neat character with an interesting design, while everyone else (especially the gf) can't stand him. Then again, I don't mind the American voices in P4 (hope you don't lose all respect for me after that statement). I have fairly decent sized place, but don't want too many animu figures all over the place.

A part of me wants to have a full collection of P4 characters, but I could care less about the males, and only really want Chie, but who knows if that will ever happen (am also kicking myself for missing Yukiko, but refuse to pay an absurd amount for her). Point being, having Teddy is not so important. I already feel silly for having two Reis and two Sky Girls as is.

Title: Re: The Animu Thread (dhex, no need to bother with this one)
Post by: ATOMU on July 21, 2009, 06:12:39 PM
FWIW Figmas hold poses well and the joints are unobtrusive. Having seen other people's fancy lady statues the paint apps are pretty much just as good, too.

I was really expecting to HATE Teddie, but he's not so bad. And neither is P4's dub/localization, which in fact is fantastic! (Aside from Naoto, but LOL GENDER AND CULTURAL NUANCES and living up to Paku Romi's leg splitting otokoyaku voice is a tall order)

Trying to collect the p4 ladies is a tough one because those kind of figures are inconsistent. Companies want to make money so they end up doing popular characters and scale, proportions and style are all varied between artists and the figures themselves. P3 getting a whole bunch of figures in the same scale and line was kind of a rare thing, and mostly just a creative way of selling the drama cds. TLDR buy who you want, completionism is dumb!

I'm wondering why we're talking about persona in the animu thread though. Shame on us.

Cuz Persona is worth talking about, anywhere, anytime. Besides, collecting figures based on characters, whether it be from a anime, manga, or game is all animu in my book.

Wait, so all the P3 women got figures? I can't ever recall one of Yukari, who aside from Aegis/Aigis, is the only female I care from that game. I know there's a Mitsuru figure, but eh, whatever.

So once again, Chie is the only one I care about, so hopefully one day, a miracle might happen. Again, could always track down the one of the left...

... And to be honest, that one isn't entirely all that amazing to begin with.

BTW, another reason why I want to hold onto Teddy is how I simply don't want nothing but large-ish statues of girls. That's kinda weird I guess. But I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out how to get what I REALLY want, and that's statues of assorted shmup ships...

No, they didn't. God, I WISH someone made a Yukari figure.
I think it was just Aigis, Akihiko, Mitsuru and the protagonist or something. They aren't very good and at least two of those characters have far better looking statues of them available.

Those shmup figures are totally dreamy. You can try yahoo! japan auctions and a shopping service for those, probably.

... and Wolverine...

... The Iron Man one looks okay, I guess. Captain Harlock as the bad guy? Just wish a more mech-oriented studio was handling it, though it still looks far better than the crappy direct to video cartoons that's already come in America. The Wolverine one on the other hands looks like utter generic bullshit. Yeesh.

Later this weekend, Summer Wars comes out, which is by the folks who made The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, mostly known for beating Studio Ghibli in theaters head to head (and for good reason, it's pretty awesome). Though the one I'm most seriously looking forward to is Trapeze. Interesting look and potentially neat concept, plus former Ghibli staffers can't hurt either.

The Black Lagoon OVA is due out next year unfortunately.

In terms of that season, Certain Scientific Railgun should be pretty good, Fairy Tail for the stupid fun.  A friend of mine is interested in Kampfer but ever since I had light novels related to me as "japanese style stories about high school = doug" well... I tend to shy away.

Ahhh Zeta! I'm not even through all of it yet and it's already my favorite anime ever.

TBH Matt, I'd actually suggest putting Zeta down and starting on the original Mobile Suit Gundam (0079) instead. Zeta is great but there's a lot of scenes that'll lose considerable impact unless you've seen 0079 beforehand, and a really decent portion of Zeta's cast originates in 0079 anyway. 0079 is really, really entertaining and a good portion of why Zeta is so fucking awesome is because of it.

The OVAs also help bridge the gap between 0079 and Zeta, most of which I haven't...actually seen because I was too impatient to start Zeta. War in the Pocket however is fantastic and definitely worth the 3 hours of your life it'll take up, and Stardust Memory and 08th MS team also come highly recommended from basically everyone I know who's seen them.

As for the other Gundams...I don't think I need to tell you not to touch Wing or Seed. Just don't. G Gundam, however, is entertaining as a seperate entity from Gundam itself. 00 is also a different experience and I'm very early into it but it's definitely up there as one of the best, awful and horrifying female fanbase notwithstanding.

tl;dr PUT ZETA DOWN MATT WHAT ARE YOU DOING

Good thing Mike doesn't come here cuz his head would explode over the following...

http://first-squad.com/

Quote
First Squad is a joint animation project of Japan’s Studio 4°C and Russian authors with Molot Entertainment. Music by Japanese musician DJ Krush. Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast is represented by a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

I wanna see it, but only cuz I'm a sucker for Studio 4°C.

PUT ZETA DOWN MATT WHAT ARE YOU DOING

FYI, both Hilary and I realized about three episodes in that we really should brush up on our history, so I'm in the midst of acquiring the entire run of 0079, whereas she recently re-watched Char's Counterattack, which I'll wait till after Zeta... In fact, just gonna try to watch everything in its chronological order from this point on, though I might skip 0083, which we both agree is a bit of a snooze-fest. Apologizes if ye is offended.

BTW, also recently acquired that old PSone 2D Gundam fighter, with the really nice at the time animation, which still holds up. Controls like ass, but hey, it's Gundam, right? Though I'd much rather play that new, Virtual On-esque arcade title that's based on Unicorn. Have you seen vids of that yet Mia? Of course you have, stupid question.

BTW, once the new PS3 firmware comes out, and if it does indeed support video files with subtitles, holy shit, it is on.

Title: Re: The Animu Thread (dhex, no need to bother with this one)
Post by: ATOMU on August 28, 2009, 02:26:25 AM
Oh, it better be on. Also honestly, for the OVAs I'm just passing along recommendations from the lifers. So idek, I didn't have the patience for them myself. It's different when you have the televised stuff under your belt, but when you're in the middle of it it's like pulling teeth when you could be doing something better than pulling teeth, like skateboarding.

I actually haven't seen footage of that! I know there's a MAJOR gundam crossover title coming out for ps3 that looks fucking awesome, but is there also a Unicorn based game coming? Or is it the same? I am too tired to google for the sake of this post. Also, Gundam games are notoriously shit, though the Dynasty Warriors Gundam ones are apparently good, and Encounters in Space? IDK, I'll get back to you on that.

I'm a bit conflicted with the art design; the main characters look too Gurren Lagann-ish, but otherwise, everything looks neat, especially the vehicles...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU1cyk44y6E

EDIT: Not surprising that the premise is fairly wacky...

Quote
The destiny of Tomoe Shiro, a formidable racer with a very promising career, experiments an U-turn when a serious accident puts his life at stake. He recovers miraculously, though, when his heart is replaced with the engine of his own racing car.
However, because of that very reason, race regulations demote him to the category of a mere mechanical part of the vehicle and is deprived from the right to participate as a pilot in regular races. Only in a far away colonial planet, along with a multitude of other charismatic pilots also vetoed from participating in regular competitions, he will be given the opportunity to race for his pride and the money of the prize. And so this exciting rally starts!

http://azurewind.tumblr.com/post/169423282/will-you-kill-someone-you-love-because-of-love

... Seems kinda generic, much like that driving oriented one from before, but I'm kinda desperate for something new, to offset the heavy dose of 0079 that I'm currently headfirst in (I like to watch stuff in pairs, especially if they can contrast each others).

I don't actually have experience with either of those! I've heard good about Xam'd.

Also if you aren't laughing through 0079 you're doing it wrong Might I interest you in Bakemonogatari, though? I might be biased because I love SHAFT but what I've watched of it I really enjoy.
The pacing is very s l o o o o o w but they keep you on your toes. Honestly, no isolated clip of it can summarize it as a whole, just try out an episode. Also it has maybe 500 OP/EDs, because it's SHAFT, but this one is p. neato: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2YXat9_xEk

Yeah. I guess it costs too much to keep it up and running or something. At the very least, there was a super slim chance of going to Japan later this month, which is all but gone, so the fact that it wouldn't be there in time somewhat takes the sting away.

Everyone says High School of the Dead is an awesome manga, but the anime looks like complete shit...

... Also, I just don't find zombies to be all that fascinating for whatever reason.

I would watch that. And since it's fitting for this thread: when are we going to play FFXIII?

Take yourself back to the 1880s where the KKK is thriving and the African American community lives in fear. The African Americans don't fear the KKK simply because they beat, rape, and kill them. No. They fear the KKK because the KKK eats them. They are the aptly named man-eaters, a kind of mix between werewolves and vampires. They consume human flesh, can shapeshift into various forms, and are practically immortal. Only one man, an ex-heavyweight boxer named Victor Freeman, dares to stand up to them. Equipped with a small arsenal and a set of modified brass knuckles, can our hero defend his people and avenge his past?

This is funnier if you pretend its not about cosplay but a show that simply has War Machine and Power Rangers in the audience...

I happened to meet Atomu the other night, so I'm posting in this thread because I know it's one of the only threads she posts in. I don't think she was as impressed as I was to randomly meet someone from a forum of which there are like 5 - 10 active posters.

My attitude towards anime is basically the same towards everything. X has always sucked, we just look upon the past with rose tinted glasses. Though that being said, there is a lot of shit out there.

If you haven't do so already, I would recommend...

Cencoroll
Summer Wars
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
Trapeze
Paranoia Agent
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
